DCD (7-7-1) coming off a loss to Toledo St. Francis Friday evening before headed to Flint Iceland arena to face the Chargers (11-4) Saturday afternoon. The Chargers didn’t let the 6-2 loss to the high powered Yellowjackets last year distort their vision, as they brought their “A” game in a great physical matchup in front of their home crowd during ALUMNI NIGHT.

Early in the first period junior goaltender Nick Kurtiak came out of his crease to make a routine play. Kurtiak uncharacteristically mishandled the puck having to recover laying out across the crease to prevent the Yellowjackets from taking a quick lead. For the first ten minutes of the game the Chargers and Yellowjackets traded off penalties with neither of them finding any luck. With 4:49 remaining, great puck movement ensued along the perimeter from Nolan Berner to Brenden Tarpening and down to Trey Carlock ringing home the Chargers first point of the afternoon.

The Charger penalty kill continued to show its dominance as it has all season by shutting down all 3 of the Yellowjackets powerplay attempts just in the 2nd period. Despite the DCD having a roster consisting of twelve underclassmen, they demonstrated their traditional highly skilled and physical play from puck drop. The Yellowjackets junior netminder Mike Beyrand was continually peppered with shots from the high-flying Chargers. At the 5:47 mark in the 3rd, the Chargers went up 2-0 on Luke Cramer’s diagonal pass slicing through the Yellowjackets defensemen to Kyle Barbour, making no mistake placing in the upper left corner. As the Yellowjackets pulled Beyrand for a sixth attacker, Cooper Gerhardt made them pay sending the puck the length of the ice into the empty net to close the contest 3-0. Nick Kurtiak secured his 9th win on the season yielding a very respectable .924 save percentage.
