The Detroit Country Day Yellow Jackets (10-3-2) hosted the Flint Powers Chargers (12-3) in a midafternoon engagement at the Southfield Civic Center this past Saturday. In recent years, despite the makeup of each club’s roster, you could expect a competitive tilt. Speaking of rosters, the Yellow Jackets suit up twelve underclassmen as the Chargers rely on three of their own, who compliment the upperclassmen very well. One of the Chargers sophomores whose contributed from day one is Andrew Parmentier, a feisty, elusive and technically sound forward. Parmentier gave the Chargers an early first period lead, playing the rebound off the boards and into the net past netminder Talon Garn (assists Czarnecki/Gerhardt). The pace of play was fast, smooth and offered up multiple textbook body checks. However, the Yellow Jackets found themselves shorthanded with back-to-back interference and tripping penalties. The Chargers looked to take advantage of the early opportunities but with no such luck. At the close of the first, Michael Tucker set up the dynamic Jack Dawley, gliding into the left of Garn sniping top shelf short side to lift the Chargers 2-0.

The 2nd period provided to be a testament of the Chargers penalty killing units. The Chargers took three consecutive trips to the “sin box”. Senior netminder Nicholas Kurtiak was instrumental, standing tall under pressure, keeping the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard. Tucker continued to be a thorn in the Yellow Jackets side with his blazing speed, as he pick pocketed their defender making his way to the other end to only be denied by Garn.

At 2:54 of the 3rd period, junior forward Caleb Doll, notched his 2nd goal of the season, sliding across the hash marks wristing one into the upper left of netminder Garn. The Yellow Jackets senior Garn turned aside 38 of the Charger shots. Kurtiak secured his 9th win with 17 saves as Powers moves to 13-3 on the season.
