The Clarkston Wolves hosted the Flint Powers Chargers at the Detroit Skating Club in a highly anticipated weeknight dual. Both programs sit at the top 5 of their respective divisions. Last year the Wolves finished 20-2-2 with an early playoff exit as the Chargers went 23-6 capturing their first state title.

Powers senior netminder Blake Zloto, diffused an early threat by the Wolves winger at 16:08 of the first period, with an aggressive poke check in front of his net. The Chargers nearly struck two minutes later when senior Brendan Sly, floating in the slot, turned quickly, sending a backhand through the Wolves goaltender’s five-hole, ringing it off the post. At the 12:43 mark, the highly talented sophomore Ayden Cook, entered the hash marks, sniping a pass from senior Mike Wenzel to give the Chargers the lead. Cook and Wenzel recorded their first points in a Powers Charger sweater. Just as the period came to a close, the Chargers couldn’t squeeze any juice out of the two power opportunities. Zloto stood tall, maintaining the team’s one point lead.

Early into the 2nd period, both squads traded off trips to the penalty box. Zloto continued to turn away multiple shots for the Chargers. The Chargers came out of the locker room a bit flat. One of the few Charger scoring opportunities took place when senior Nolan Berner applied stiff pressure on the Wolves forward, forcing a turnover. Berner took possession in the neutral zone, glided his way down the Olympic ice to only be denied by netminder Brady Damian. At 8:10 remaining in the second, off the draw, Clarkston’s Owen Croston snipped the upper right corner of Zloto. Less than a minute later, Clarkston’s Kyle Lynch stole the lead with a blistering a wrister just inside the Charger blue line. A solid Charger threat ensued by the senior Caleb Doll’s shifty move in the offensive zone. He slithered by the Wolves defender, 1 on 1 to be met by the goaltender’s left leg pad.

As the 3rd period came to an end, multiple last second attempts transpired in front of the Wolves netminder, with the Charger tender pulled but no such luck. Chargers netminder Blake Zloto recorded 21 saves on the evening.
