The Powers Chargers hosted the Tri-Valley Titans (composed of 8 different schools) in their home opener Wednesday evening with a packed house. The surrounding community filled the stands of the Flint Iceland arena honoring first responders and those that served in the military. Always a great opportunity to recognize the men and women that have and still sacrifice for the betterment of society.

This past week, the Chargers came up short in a close game with the Wolves of Clarkston but reorganized and jumped back into the win column with an 8-0 mercy over the Titans.

The Chargers received goal scoring production from seven different players. Andrew Burny (2), Landon Miller, Mike Wenzel, Ayden Cook, Nolan Berner, Andrew Parmentier and Brendan Sly. Whitman Park, Parker Bendall, Ethan Haley and Landon Miller secured their first points as varsity high school players. The helpers on the eight goals were provided by Caleb Doll, Tom Lavoie, Matt Lavoie, Andrew Parmentier, Whitman Park, Ayden Cook (2), Parker Bendall (2) and Brendan Sly (2).

Wenzel opened up the Charger scoring by netting his first varsity goal in a Charger uniform around the 14:00 mark of the first period. Parmentier followed up essentially going end to end to bury his first of the season. With under three minutes remaining, junior Landon Miller showed his two way play hustling to back check the Titan lifting up his stick creating a turnover. Senior Nolan Berner almost put the Chargers up by three ringing one off the far post.

The floodgates opened in the second period when sophomore Cook executed his awarded penalty shot opting for the backhand deke. At 12:04, senior Sly picked the biscuit up off the offensive zone draw, with a quick release, surprising Titan netminder Noah Wakefield. Junior Burny picked up his first of two of the contest, sneaking into the titan zone, beating Wakefield between his leg pads. Moments later, Burny capitalized again but this time on a one-timer just left of the right face-off dot. With 3:32 on the clock, Miller with no hesitation owning the slot, sniped Wakefield to lift the Chargers by seven entering the second intermission (Miller’s first varsity goal).

The zamboni virtually left the ice, setting up the sheet perfectly for senior captain Berner’s snap shot from the point, which deflected into the back of the cage to finish off the Titans. Netminders Blake Zloto and Gavin Stutts-Miller shared the duties in the shutout.

Final: Powers 8 Tri-Valley 0
