The No. 5 ranked Flint Powers Catholic boys hockey team used a shutout and 20 saves byAustin Kane to defeat No. 10 Chelsea on 3-0 on Saturday.

Powers took a 1-0 lead into the third period after Mike Forman's first period goal, before Riley Start scored a power-play goal late in the third.

"It was pretty quick into the power play," Powers coach Travis Perry said of Start's goal. "Riley shot the puck and it went off a couple legs and went into the back of the net.

"It was a good win against a quality opponent. It's a good way to start off the second half of the season."

Forman added two assists, while Kane, a senior, earned his fourth straight victory.

"He's been playing since his freshman year," Perry said of Kane. "He's one of the better goalies in the area and he's playing phenomenal. Our defense played really well in front of him and they really limited Chelsea's chances. You don't want to give up too many chances."

Chelsea junior Derek Schaedig totaled 30 saves on 32 shots in the loss.

"I thought he played very well," Chelsea coach Don Wright said. "It was just unfortunate that the one power-play goal got by him. We needed to create more offense, and we just didn't do it.

"I thought it was a good game. It was 1-0 late in the third and they got a power-play goal that hit a skate and went in. It was a good close game; we just weren't able to get a puck behind their goaltender."

Flint Powers plays Midland Dow at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, before Chelsea hosts Ann Arbor Huron on Thursday.

"We're extremely young and we just have to have better habits and do a better job of winning battles," Wright said. "Powers is a good team, and it was a good competitive game. Guys just need to understand the intensity we're going to have to have to win that game."
