FLINT, MI -- One of the biggest high school hockey games of the season in the Flint area takes place this week.

No. 7-ranked Flint Powers Catholic (13-4) hosts Davison (12-2) at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Iceland Arenas in a crucial game for the Saginaw Valley League standings. Both teams have one loss in the league, along with Saginaw Heritage, and a win could go along way in keeping up in the race for an SVL title.

After losing back-to-back games to the University of Detroit Jesuit and Bay City Central, the Chargers have won two of their last three, beating Mt. Pleasant 5-3 on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and splitting a pair of games in Indiana over the weekend.

Powers Catholic took a 2-1 lead into the third period on Friday against Culver (Ind.) Academy, with head coach Travis Perry calling it two of the better periods of hockey his team has played all season, before allowing three third-period goals to lose 4-2. They bounced back on Saturday, Jan. 24, beating South Bend St. Joseph's 4-2 on their own three-goal third period.

"Davison is one of our biggest rivals and we know every game in our league is an important one," Perry said. "We'll have to find a way to score some goals, which we've struggled with at times, but we are looking forward to the challenge."

Davison, meanwhile, comes in Wednesday, Jan. 28, riding a four-game winning streak in which the Cardinals are scoring more than five goals per game. They beat Portage Central 4-1 on Saturday and Midland 4-2 on Wednesday after scoring seven goals each on Birmingham United and Cadillac the week before.

This is the first and only meeting scheduled between the two teams, and Powers Catholic is unbeaten in the last four games.
