The Howell hockey team scored three goals in the second period and held on for the 4-3 win over host Flint Powers Catholic on Wednesday.

Brendan Adams scored two goals to lead Howell (16-5), while Scott Alfano added one goal.

"We gave up a couple of face-off goals in the first period and their goalie Austin Kane stood on his head for most of the game," Howell coach Mike Mantua said. "We got some breaks in the second period, and that helped us get going a little bit. There was a breakaway goal by Brendan Adams, a few rebounds in front of the net, and we were able to put some grinding goals away. The score wasn't really indicative of how well Powers played in the first period, but our boys stuck with it, played sound team defense and came away with a good win."

Brendan Smith scored two goals and added one assist to lead Powers Catholic (15-8), while Dan Delong added two assists.

Austin Kane made 32 saves on 36 shots.

"We've had some great first periods this season, and put together another solid one tonight," Flint Powers Catholic coach Travis Perry said. "Then we went out and allowed Howell to score three straight goals in about a span of five minutes. We got too relaxed, took time off and that stretch put us back for the rest of the game."

Perry believes his team can gain some valuable experience from a game against such a talented opponent.

"We're disappointed with the loss, but Howell is ranked No. 6 in Division 1 for a reason," Perry said. "We'll learn from this one, and can take some solace in the fact that we hung with a quality team for most of the game."
