The Flint Powers Catholic team adheres to a simple saying: uphold the tradition. And that's exactly what the Chargers did by defeating Big Rapids 7-0 in a Division 3 regional final at the I.C.E. Arena on Saturday, claiming the program's 32nd regional title.

Leading 1-0 after the first period, FPC scored five goals in the second period to secure the victory.

"The first period was good and we had a lot of shots, but for whatever reason, we weren't able to put the puck in the back of the net," FPC coach Travis Perry said. "It was in the second period that the floodgates opened, and that was the difference in the game.

“Our guys have fought through a lot of adversity this year, and we're upholding a tradition that was established long before I was here.”

Mike Forman led the way with a hat-trick, and Jeff Polakowski, Dan Delong, Garrett Johnson and Conor Witherspoon scored a goal apiece. Polakowski also had a pair of assists, as did Chase Knoblock, Jake Ploucha and Riley Start. Forman, Witherspoon, Cam Lieffers and Zach Rabine each had one assist.

“Mike's one of the top guys in our area,” Perry said. “I thought he did a great job of using his linemates, and I thought as a group, we played our best game of the year.”

The Chargers (19-8, 5-2 ) will play the winner of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central and East Grand Rapids 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Summit in Lansing.

Big Rapids concludes the season with a 16-12 record.

“I'm very proud of my team,” Big Rapids Coach Tim Blashill said. “We battled hard all the way until the end. Flint Powers took advantage of some of our breakdowns, but I really want to say how proud I am of all of our seniors.”
