Solid Goaltending, Power Play Goals Seal Win Over Midland Dow

Flint Powers Catholic gained a hard-fought victory over their Saginaw Valley League rival Midland Dow last night on the Olympic ice of the Midland Civic Arena. Midland attempted to pound Powers into submission, but, penalties and the solid goaltending of Senior Patrick Hoedeman resulted in a Powers victory. Dow drew first blood at 1:07 of the 1st period when forward Alex Farrell scored an unassisted goal. Powers evened things up at 2:42 when Junior forward Brendan Smith blasted a laser beam from the right point on the power play. Juniors Jake Polakowski and Chase Knoblock assisted. Dow came back with a goal by Senior forward Johnny Wilson with assists from Sophomore forward Casey LaRue and Senior forward Alex Farrell at 1:46 of the 2nd to go up 2-1.  At 6:34, Brendan Smith checked in with his second goal of the game. He was assisted by Sophomore forward Cam Lieffers.  In the closing moments of the 2nd with Dow short-handed, Powers went ahead to stay when Junior forward Chase Knoblock, who was stationed on the door step, slammed a pass from Junior forward Conor Witherspoon past the Dow goalie. The score would remain 3-2 until 7:09 of the 3rd when Sophomore forward Christian Wentworth scored Powers’ third power play goal of the game with assists from Cam Lieffers and Freshman forward Mason Weiss. Flint Powers Catholic faces off against Division 1 powerhouse U of D Jesuit on Saturday at the Crystal Fieldhouse.
