Powers Wins Home Opener Versus GB

The Flint Powers Chargers hosted Grand Blanc at the Crystal Field House Wednesday for its 2016-17 home opener. Powers, playing before a large crowd, dominated the Bobcats by a score of 10 – 2.

Powers opened the scoring 1:10 seconds in to the first period when Hans Hering outletted to Conor Witherspoon, who decoyed the defenseman to the right corner and lasered a pass to Brendan Smith who was all alone at the front door for his first goal of the game. At 11:51, Bobcats senior forward Cam Smith found the back of the net on a deflection off a Powers defenseman to make it 1-1. Seconds later, junior forward Cam Conover scored for Powers on an assist from senior defenseman Garrett Johnson to make it 2-1. Powers junior forward Christian Wentworth scored next on a very nice play with an assist from senior forward Jon Thomas. 3-1 Powers. At 7:14, Garrett Johnson continued his torrid scoring pace with Powers’ fourth goal of the period. Cam Conover and Hans Hering assisted. Powers fifth goal of the period came at 5:06 when Christian Wentworth scored on assists from Conor Witherspoon and Hans Hering. Grand Blanc forward Spencer Scarber scored with 34 seconds left to close out the first period. Owen Walker and Joe Schmit assisted.

Senior forward Brendan Smith netted the lone goal of the second period on assists from junior forward Mason Weiss and senior Conor Witherspoon (playmaker).

With just 14 seconds gone in the third, Powers rang the bell again when Mason Weiss found the back of the net on assists from Brendan Smith and Conor Witherspoon (Texas playmaker). Forty seconds later Powers struck again, this time junior forward Sam Lechel lit the lamp on an assist from Cam Conover to make it 8-2. Cam Conover scored the next goal at 10:04 (his fourth point of the game) with the able assistance of senior forward Noah Reeser and line mate Sam Lechel. Senior forward Conor Witherspoon sent the crowd home early with a goal (his fifth point of the game) at 6:46 of the third with assists from Brendan Smith (four points) and senior d-man Mac Diver. Interestingly, all of Powers’ goals were scored at even strength.

Powers’ next game is Wednesday November 30 at the Crystal Field House, when the Chargers take on Jackson Lumen Christi.
