The Flint Powers Chargers made the long trip to Muskegon Saturday to play Grand Rapids Catholic Central as part of the annual OK vs. SVL Challenge. This match featured the two top-ranked teams in Division 3.

As one would expect, the game started out tight with GRCC drawing first blood at 12:25 of the first period when forward Jack Pendery got one past Powers netminder Brady Stebbins. Oskari Jouhki assisted on the Pendery goal. Powers tied it up one minute later when senior forward Conor Witherspoon lit the lamp with the able assistance of line mate Mason Weiss and defenseman Jake Polakowski. The first period ended with the teams tied at 1-1.

In the second period, Conor Witherspoon delivered again at 3:52 from the high slot with assists from senior forward Brendan Smith and Polakowski.  Jake Polakowski gave Powers a two-goal lead near the end of the second on an assist from senior forward Chase Knoblock. The teams went to intermission with score 3-1 in favor of Powers.

Powers poured in three more goals in the third period beginning with Brendan Smith’s goal at 11:21. Mason Weiss and Conor Witherspoon had the assists. Seconds later, junior forward Cam Leiffers checked in with a goal with the assistance of junior defenseman Carson Snyder and Chase Knoblock. Brendan Smith completed the scoring for Powers with his second goal of the game at 6:36 of the third with assists from Witherspoon and Polakowski, both of whom had four points for the game. The Chargers outshot GRCC 42-17.
