Flint Powers 4 Zionsville 1

Flint kicked off the weekend with a game versus Zionsville at the Indy Fuel Tank. This game resembled a wrestling match more than hockey and featured a total of fifteen (15) penalties. Powers took control early in the first with two goals. Sophomore forward Mason Weiss opened the scoring at 13:53 with an unassisted goal. Thirty-nine seconds later, sophomore defender Josh Warda lit the lamp at 13:14. Senior forward Brendan Smith and Mason Weiss assisted on the Warda goal. For the remainder of the period, the Powers skaters desperately tried to escape the clutches of the Zionsville wrestlers.

There wasn’t much hockey played in the second period as the men in stripes worked out their new whistles calling eight (8) penalties. At 1:21, Zionsville’s Thomas Warr found the back of the net with assists from Drew Tokash and Robbie Donovan. 2-1 in favor of Powers after two periods of play.

The third period was more clutching and grabbing as the Powers players attempted to provide themselves with time and space. Mason Weiss managed to shake free long enough to score his second goal of the game at 12:37. Senior defenseman Jake Polakowski had the assist. Senior forward Conor Witherspoon closed out the scoring for Powers with a goal at 2:48 despite being partially undressed on the way to the net. Jake Polakowski earned his second assist of the game on the Witherspoon goal.

Powers goaltender Brady Stebbins made 15 saves for the win (welcome back, Brady!).

Flint Powers 6 Carmel Gold 1

On Saturday, Powers faced off against the reigning State of Indiana High School Champions, Carmel Gold at the Carmel Ice Skadium.

The Chargers initiated scoring operations at 13:43 of the first period when senior defenseman Garrett Johnson netted his eighth goal of the season with assists from senior forwards Brendan Smith and Conor Witherspoon. Junior forward Christian Wentworth made it 2-0 in favor of Powers at 8:01. Sophomore forward Mason Weiss and Brendan Smith (his second) had the assists. With 10 seconds remaining in the first, Powers went up 3-0 on a goal by senior forward Jon Thomas. Sophomore forward Luke Evo and defenseman Garrett Johnson rendered invaluable assistance. Carmel recorded zero shots on goal in the first period.

Powers cranked it back up in the second at 13:40 when senior forward Conor Witherspoon scored a power play goal. Witherspoon was assisted by Brendan Smith (playmaker) and Jon Thomas. Brendan Smith checked in with a power play goal at 6:47 to make it 5-0 in favor of the Chargers. Assists to Mason Weiss and Conor Witherspoon. Carmel got on the scoreboard at 4:03 of the second with a power play goal by senior forward Kaleb Boyl. Matt Hutton and Vince Grasso assisted on Boyl’s goal.  5-1 Powers at the end of two periods.

The lone goal of the third period was scored by Conor Witherspoon (his second). He was assisted by Jake Polakowski and Luke Evo. Chargers goalie Parker Rey made 13 saves for the win.

The Chargers will be back in action this Friday and Saturday in Grand Rapids for the Catholic School Showcase.
