The Powers Chargers hockey team braved the wintery conditions and traveled to Gaylord this past weekend to participate in the Annual D3 Challenge defeating Alpena 5-1 and East Grand Rapids 5-1.

Luke Evo wasted no time putting Powers on the board versus EGR by re-directing a Mike Wilson blast from the point and into the net at the 7:34 mark of the first period. Minutes later Evo and Lance Mullin worked the puck to the slot finding Cam Leiffers who torched one past the Pioneer net minder to extend the lead. With time winding down in the first period, Connor Korhonen and Keigan Wildfong found a wide open Grant Morrison at the top of the circle who ripped a shot off the cross bar and into the twine (bar-down) giving the Chargers a 3-0 lead to end the first.

The Chargers continued their scoring barrage into the second period when Cam Conover one-timed a power play goal off the pass of line mate Cam Leiffers. Evo scored his second goal of the contest when he ripped a snap shot short side past the EGR goalie putting Powers up 5-0.

The EGR defense stiffened as they held the potent Powers offense scoreless throughout the third period. Ben Forsyth scored for the Pioneers with 5 minutes to go in the game, assisted by Kamden Whallon to avoid the shut out.

Powers out shot East Grand Rapids 30-18 in the contest.

Powers begins Saginaw Valley Conference play Wednesday night when they take on Mt. Pleasant at Crystal Fieldhouse.
