The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team capped off the 2nd game of the weekend D3 Hockey Challenge in Gaylord with a 5-0 shut-out win over Divine Child(DC) at the Ostego County Sportsplex.  Powers would control the game from start to finish and outshoot, out chance and out hit DC en route to the victory. The shots in the game were skewed in favor of Powers 37-17 and Brent Zloto earned his 2nd  shut-out of the season turning away everything DC threw at him.  The Chargers would carry the play late into the first period when Freshman defenseman, Kyle Barbour, would pick up a loose puck behind his net and go coast to coast making several moves before snapping a high wrister past DC Senior goalie, Adam Yost, to take the 1-0 lead. Powers would outshoot DC 9-3 in the first period. The closest DC would come all game was a partial breakaway shot by DC Junior, Tommy Kalchik, that found iron and went wide behind Zloto. DC had three shots in the first stanza.

The second period was under control of Powers as they scored 4 goals in 10 minutes which put the game on ice! The Chargers kept the play in the DC end with physical play and cycling the puck which resulted in numerous scoring chances and goals. First, Senior Alex Washburn would score 3 minutes into the second period, assisted by Sophomores Jacques Lavrack and Gunner Birmingham. Then, Washburn would get his second of the game on the power play when he snapped a wrist shot beating Yost high glove side. Lavrack (2nd assist of the game) and Senior Tommy Shubeck would also assist on the goal giving Powers a 3 goal lead. Junior, Tyler Lawrence, would add to the lead just 2 minutes later with an unassisted tally extending the lead to 4-0 in favor of the Chargers. The scoring for the game would end with a nifty goal from Andrew Wurtz, assisted by Freshman Kyle Barbour. The period would see Powers outshoot DC 17 -3.

Powers kept DC out of their zone for much of the 3rd stanza until back to back penalties gave DC a 5-3 man advantage late in the game. Zloto, who stood most of the 3rd as a bystander, finally was able to show his stuff with 6 saves in 40 seconds that preserved the shut-out for the Chargers.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry, “Was glad to see other guys contributing and was pleased with the shut-out for Zloto.” Powers will be on the road to face off against Bay City in a league game on Wednesday night.
