Game Recap- Powers vs. Bay City Central/Western Wolves 12-18-2019

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was on the road for a 7pm face-off vs. the Bay City Wolves at the Bay County Civic Arena.  Powers would eventually come away with a 3-1 victory and improve to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Saginaw Valley Conference.

The first period would see Powers control the shots 15-5 and carry a majority of the play, however, they had challenges controlling the puck in the Wolves zone.  Many Charger opportunities would end as the first shot was either covered by Wolves Sophomore goalie, Cayden Kerkau or sent down the ice on numerous ‘icing’ calls. The interruptions and choppy play seemed to frustrate the Chargers, who struggled to figure out Kerkau. Powers goalie Senior, Brennan Churchill didn’t see much action in the first, making only five saves.

The teams would trade minor penalties throughout the second period, as both teams had opportunities on the power play to grab a lead, but sound penalty killing for each team kept the game scoreless going into the third stanza.  Bay City out shot Powers 9-6 in the second period.

Bay City would take the 1-0 lead on a power play goal less than six minutes into the third period by Junior, Ethan Borowski. Powers was within 10 seconds of killing off a hooking penalty, when a point shot by Wolves Senior, Jacob Holsing was tipped by Borowski and found a way past Powers Goalie, Churchill.  Powers would counter 3 minutes later when Senior Joey Carpenter would tie the game with a laser from the top of the right circle, finally beating the Wolves goalie Kerkau high glove side. Senior, Tim Washburn would add his 1st of 2 helpers of the game on Carpenters goal. The Wolves would get into penalty trouble later in the third, giving Powers successive man advantages, which Powers would capitalize on.  Powers Senior, Tommy Shubeck was “Johnny on the spot” as the puck pin balled off his knee and found a way behind the Wolves goalie, which gave Powers the lead 2-1! Sophomores Gunnar Birmingham and Andrew Wurtz would assist on Shubecks power play goal which was his 1st of the season.  Just over a minute later, Junior Tyler Lawrence would feed Joey Carpenter with a beautiful saucer pass on a 2 on 1 break, Carpenter snapped in his 2nd of the game with a wrist shot past Kerkau extending the Powers lead to 3-1 with 1:30 left in the contest. Tim Washburn would also assist on the goal that iced the game for the Chargers.  Bay City had little luck in the Powers zone in the third period, mustering only 4 shots on Churchill. Powers had 17 shots in the third period and for the game Powers out shot Bay City 38-18.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry said, “We couldn’t find the back of the net for most of the game and it was frustrating to watch, we struggled but figured out a way to win.” Powers will be home against rival Clarkston on Saturday for the annual “Teddy Bear Toss” Game at 3pm.
