Game Recap- Powers vs. Clarkston Wolves 12-21-2019

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was home for the annual “Teddy Bear Toss” game on Saturday afternoon vs. the Clarkston Wolves at Iceland Arena. They would fall to the Wolves 3-1 in a closely contested showdown.

The Wolves would control a majority the first half of the period and smother the Chargers in their own end with an effective forecheck that had Powers turning over the puck and on their heels. Ten Minutes into the game, Clarkston would take the lead on a goal from Senior, Joey Ketzler, who banged in a loose puck to the right of Powers Senior goalie, Brent Zloto.  Zloto made the first save, but the Powers defense didn’t clear away the loose puck or Ketzler.  Wolves Senoir, Logan McGivern, assisted on the goal that gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Then, after a big hit by Powers Senior Tim Washburn, which sent a Wolves player to the locker room, Powers found some momentum. They would carry the play and tie the game on a bullet shot by Senior, Tyler Lawrence with under 3 minutes left in the first period. Powers Senior, Joey Carpenter would assist on the goal, which sent close to 100 stuffed bears onto the ice! Powers evened the score and the shots in the period as both teams ended the session with 10 shots each.

The teams would tighten up and play a sound second period. Powers had several chances to take the lead but could not capitalize.  A shot by Junior, Alex Washburn would roll in behind Wolves Senior net-minder, Jakob Harper, and with the puck inches from crossing the goal line, was cleared away.  Sophomore Jacques Lavrack would then send the clearing shot back through the open crease and wide of the net.  Clarkston would take a cross checking penalty late in the 2nd and as Powers was setting up to possibly take the lead,  Wolves Senior, Logan McGivern, would make a heads up play by pressuring the Powers point man. He managed to chip the puck up the boards and Clarkston charged in on a 2-1.  McGivern then fed Wolves Senior Cam Thomas on a beautiful pass and Thomas would snap a shot past Zloto giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead on the short-handed tally. Powers still had time on the power play to tie the game, but failed to score. Powers Senior, Ben Siwek, had the Wolves goalie flat on his back and down but his rebound chance went off the cross bar with 15 seconds left in the second period. The Wolves outshot Powers 11-10 in the second period.

Powers carried the play for most of the 3rd period and had several chances to score. The Wolves played well defensively in their end, deflecting or blocking many shots and Jakob Harper was magnificent for the Wolves in-between the pipes, making several key saves throughout the period. Clarkston would take back to back penalties half way through the period giving the Chargers a glorious opportunity to tie the game. The 50 second 5-3 man advantage was killed off with Powers only registering one shot on net.  Powers would pull Zloto for an extra attacker, but Wolves Cam Thomas would get his 2nd of the game with just under a minute left, as he picked up a loose puck and from just over the center ice red line deposit it into an empty Powers net.  Powers would hold the edge in shots in the third 8-5 and for the game, the shots were even at 28 each.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry said, “These are the games when you have to dig deep and find a way, today we didn’t!” Powers will be traveling to Grand Rapids on 12-28 to play Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
