Game Recap- Powers vs. Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars 12-28-2019

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team traveled to Grand Rapids for a league game vs the Catholic Central Cougars on Saturday afternoon and would have to settle for a 1-1 tie.

The Chargers would control the shots, scoring chances and flow of the first period, as they kept the game on the Cougars side of center ice. Unfortunately, the Cougars would hold the lead at the end of the first stanza thanks to a nifty goal by Senior Jacob Onstott. With Powers holding the play in the Cougars end, a clearing attempt by Cougars Junior Kimble Sullivan bounced off the high glass and found Onstott, who went in on a 2 on 1 break and beat the Powers defense and Senior goalie Brennan Chruchill, giving the Cougars the lead with 1:45 remaining in the period.  It was just the Cougars 3rd shot of the period. The shots the first period favored Powers 10-3, not including a shot off the post early on in the period by Powers.  Several good chances by the Chargers were gobbled up by Junior goalie Lucas Chalfoun, who made several quality saves during the period.

Powers continued the pressure in the second period, controlling the play and finally tying the game on a shot from Senior Joey Carpenter that would beat Chalfoun high blocker side. Junior, Tyler Lawrence and Sophomore Jacques Lavrack, would each earn an assist on the tying goal. Lavrack, provided a partial screen on the shot, which seemed to ricochet in off the handle of Chalfoun goalie stick. Powers carried the play for most of the second period but the Cougars defense didn’t allow any 2nd chance rebounds. Each team had power play opportunities but failed to score. Shots in the second were dominated by Powers, 12 -7 but the score remained at 1-1 going into the third period.

Again, Powers carried the play for most of the 3rd period and had several chances to score, including another shot off the goal post. The Cougars played well defensively in their end, keeping Powers away from the front of Chalfoun and deflecting or blocking several shots. The shots in the third were 8-5 Powers.  The game would continue on into an 8 minute overtime session that would see each team get 4 shots a piece and the teams seemed exhausted when the horn finally rang. Shots for the game were 34-19 in favor of Powers.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry commented, “We need to somehow manufacture some goals and get more guys crashing the net for second chance rebounds.” Powers will take on Chelsea at Iceland Arena Saturday January 4th at 3pm.
