Weekend Recap- Powers vs. Olentangy Orange and Northern Kentucky Norsemen 1-18 & 1-19-2020

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team traveled to Columbus this year for the annual Father/Son trip and continued their dominating play with two shut-out victories over Olentangy Orange 6-0 and the Northern Kentucky Norsemen 13-0 and improved to 10-3-2 overall.

The first challenge of the weekend came Friday evening against the Olentangy Orange at the Chiller Ice Arena.  Powers met the challenge with an impressive 6-0 victory, while out-shooting the Orange 32-17.  Powers was in control from the very start of the game, seizing the lead on their first shot of the weekend with a goal by Sophomore, Brenden Tarpening. Senior Tim Washburn added 2 goals and by the end of the first period, Powers would lead 3-0. Powers needed to kill a 5-3 man advantage by the Orange early in the 2nd period, but the Charger penalty killers, along with Senior goalie, Brenden Churchill, held the Orange off the scoreboard. Powers would add 2 more goals in the second frame, first by Sophomore, Jacques Lavrack, and Tim Washburn completed his hat trick with a late goal on a partial breakaway.  Freshman Michael Tucker would score the only goal in the third period, netting his first career high school goal making the final score 6-0 Powers!  Tim Washburn would lead Powers with 4 points as Michael Tucker and Brenden Tarpening would each have 2 points in the game. For Churchill, this shut-out would be his 2nd of the season.

Powers would turn their attention to the Northern Kentucky Norsemen for a Saturday evening game at the Ice Haus and defeat the Norsemen 13-0. Eleven different Powers skaters would find the back of the net in this game and Senior Brent Zloto would earn his 4th shut-out of the season!  The Chargers controlled the game and out-shot the Norsemen 38-10. Sophomore Nolan Salayko would set the tone 4 minutes into the contest, followed by 4 more Charger tallies to include Joey Carpenter, Tommy Shubeck, Tim Washburn and Eddie Barbieri, ending the first period at 5-0 Chargers.  Powers would then add 7 more goals in the second with goals by Jacques Lavrack, Alex Washburn, who would have a hat trick in the second frame, Andrew Wurtz, Tommy Shubeck and junior Alec Antle.  For Antle, his goal would be the first of the season! Powers let off the accelerator in the third period with just one goal from Gunnar Birmingham.  Jacques Lavrack would lead the team with a 5 point game and Alex Washburn had 4 points.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry commented that “the annual Father/Son trip is always a special weekend! The boys played focused hockey and it was a great experience for everyone!”  Powers will be away vs. Grand Blanc on Wednesday night at 5:00pm.
