Game Recap- Powers vs. Midland Dow Chargers

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team traveled to Midland for a Friday evening showdown with the Midland Dow Chargers. Powers would fall to Dow 5-1, dropping their record to 5-2 in the Saginaw Valley League and 11-4-2 overall.

Powers started the game with the momentum and carried most of the play for the first half of the period and they would strike first! Senior, Tim Washburn’s shot on a 2-1 opportunity, was kicked out by Dow Senior goalie, Collin Lemanski and Freshman, Michael Tucker, pounced on the loose puck rebound to score— making it 1-0, Powers 7 minutes in! That goal unfortunately, was the only goal for Powers as Dow turned the tide the second half of the period and scored 2 goals. The first, just 20 seconds after the Powers goal, Dow Senior, Lucas Churchfield, banged home a point shot rebound to tie the game. Dow would have Powers on their heels after the tying goal and less than 2 minutes later, Dow Sophomore, Nolan Sanders, gave them the lead for good— snapping in a wrist shot from the slot that beat Powers goalie Brent Zloto, glove side. Although Powers would hold a slight edge in shots 11-10, most of those shots occurred early and up to the Tucker goal.

Powers would have all kinds of trouble with Dow in the second frame, as they continuously turned over the puck and struggled, not only in their own zone, but also to generate offense inside the Dow zone.  Dow Junior, Cam Patty, would score a seeing eye goal from the point that eluded everyone and found the corner of the Powers goal, making it 3-1, just a minute into the second period. Dow continued the pressure throughout the period and gave Powers fits, as they could not get to the middle of the ice on the Dow defense.  Dow would extend the lead 10 minutes later as Powers, failed to clear the puck and Sophomore, Billy VanSumeren, backed doored Zloto, making it 4-1. Powers would get out shot 11-3 in the second frame and could only muster one quality chance all period.

The third period was a copy-cat of the second, as Dow dictated most of the play and as the period continued, they went into a prevent style and kept Powers away from Lemanski. Powers generated little if any pressure and the Dow defense played a sound period protecting the big lead. The scoring would end late in the game when Dow Senior, Luke Blasy, scored an unassisted goal with less than 2 minutes left in the game, making the final 5-1 Dow.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry commented that “We saw a really good hockey team tonight, we made too many critical errors and they capitalized.”  Powers will be Home vs. Milford on Tuesday night at Iceland- 6pm.
