Game Recap- Powers vs. Saginaw Heritage

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was home to challenge the Saginaw Heritage Hawks for a league game at Iceland Arena Wednesday evening. Saginaw Heritage would prevail 5-2, dropping Powers record to 5-3 in the Saginaw Valley League and 13-6-2 overall.

Powers started quickly, with a goal from Tim Washburn just 15 seconds into the game as he collected a heads-up pass from Tommy Shubeck at the Heritage blue line, broke in and beat Heritage goalie Jacob Winters to give Powers the lead. But Heritage struck right back, as Powers had trouble clearing the zone and Mathew Cole tied the game 45 seconds later, on a redirected shot that beat Powers goalie Brennan Churchill.  Heritage scored just 30 seconds later as Powers again lost control of the puck deep in their own zone and this time William Schmidt’s shot trickled in making it 2-1 Saginaw. Each team settled in and traded scoring chances for the remainder of the period and played solid back and forth hockey with the shots being close to even 8-6 in favor of Saginaw.

The second period would see much the same type of play, back and forth, for almost 12 minutes. Saginaw caught a break after a clearing pass by Powers was picked off and a quick 2-1 developed into the Powers zone. The cross-ice pass attempt by Heritage’s Ethan Houck deflected off a Powers defenseman’s stick and snuck into the corner of the net extending the lead to 3-1 Saginaw. Powers then took a penalty late in the 2nd period, giving Saginaw the man advantage, which Brady Rappuhn converted on making it 4-1 Saginaw. Shots on goal for the period favored Saginaw 12-9.

Saginaw spent most of the 3rd period protecting the 4-1 lead and added a 5th goal by Evan Greenwood as he picked the pocket of a Powers Defenseman and scored with just over 6 minutes left in the game. Powers countered with a goal by Brenden Tarpening with 2 minutes left, but a comeback was too late as the game ended 5-2 Saginaw. Saginaw out-shot Powers 28-22 for the game.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry commented that “That was a really good hockey team we saw tonight, we have to protect the puck in our zone, too many errors and they capitalized.”  Powers will be Home vs. Detroit Country Day on Friday night Iceland- 5:30pm.
