Game Recap- Powers vs. Tri-Valley Titans 2-17-2020

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team shook off back to back losses with an impressive 8-0 victory over the Titans of Tri-Valley on a rare Monday evening quest at Iceland Arena. The Chargers improved to 14-7-2 and Brennan Churchill earned his 4th shut-out of the season, facing just 16 Titan shots. Tim Washburn, Kyle Barbour and Joey Carpenter had 3 points each in the game for the Chargers.

Powers opened the scoring 9 minutes into the 1st period as Brenden Tarpening found Luke Cramer standing right on the doorstep of Titan goalie Vance Vayre. Cramer nudged a sneaky backhander under Vayre giving Powers the early lead. Two minutes later, Powers extended the lead as Michael Tucker picked up a face-off win from Brenden Tarpening, moved to the middle and blistered a shot by Vayre, making it 2-0 Powers.  Charger Tim Washburn extended the lead on a pretty give and go with Joey Carpenter deep in the Titan zone. Carpenter quickly returned a pass back to Washburn as he broke to the net, snapping in a wrist shot high glove side on Vayre. Powers overwhelming pressure created a power play opportunity that resulted in another goal, this time by Kyle Barbour as he unleashed a cannon from the point making it 4-0! Powers outshot the Titans 21-6 in the first period.

Powers continued the onslaught with three more goals in the 2nd period as the relentless fore-check again paid off! This time Powers forward Tommy Shubeck stripped a Titan defenseman of the puck and cruised to the front of the net, placing a perfect backhand shot under the sprawling Vayre making it 5-0 Powers, 3 minutes into the 2nd period. Then, Powers Jacques Lavrack set up shop in the left circle and snapped in a nifty pass from Brenden Tarpening extending the lead to 6-0 Powers.  Powers also scored a shorthanded goal late in the period as Tim Washburn added his 2nd goal of the evening on a breakaway getting in behind the Titan defense to make it 7-0 Powers.  The shots heavily favored Powers 21-8 in the period.

The final goal came just 2 ½ minutes into the 3rd period off the stick of Alec Antle.  He collected a centering pass by Luke Kramer and blasted a shot beating Vayre to complete the mercy!

Powers Coach, Travis Perry, commented that “Good to see our guys bounce back after a couple of tough losses.” Powers will be home vs Mt. Pleasant, Wednesday at Iceland arena for Senior Night at 6pm.
