Game Recap- Powers vs. Mt. Pleasant:   2-19-2020

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was home Wednesday evening for “Senior Night” at Iceland Arena.  Tim Washburn, Ben Siwek, Tommy Shubeck, Joey Carpenter, Brennan Churchill and Brent Zloto along with their parents celebrated the on ice pre-game ceremony honoring the seniors and the contributions they all have made to the Powers hockey program over the past years! Powers would come away with a 5-0 victory behind the stellar goaltending of Brent Zloto, who turned away all 18 Oiler shots earning his 5th shut-out of the season.

Powers struck first just 2 minutes into the 1st period as Andrew Wurtz tipped an Alex Washburn point shot 3 feet in front of Oiler net-minder Stuart MacDonald giving the Chargers the 1-0 lead. Eddie Barbieri also drew an assist on the Wurtz goal.  Powers carried the play for a majority of the period generating several good scoring chances that MacDonald turned away holding the Oilers in the game. Powers would extend the lead with just over a minute left as the hard working Jacques Lavrack intercepted the puck at center ice and fed Joey Carpenter moving into the Oiler zone.  Carpenter snapped a wrist shot high blocker side beating MacDonald extending the Powers lead to 2-0.  Powers out-shot the Oilers 14-5 and Zloto had to be sharp, stopping a partial breakaway mid-way through the period.

Powers again carried the momentum during 2nd period and continued the effective fore-check that resulted in a goal by Luke Cramer.  After some tireless work by Tommy Shubeck along the corner boards, Brenden Tarpening collected a Shubeck pass and then fed Cramer, who positioned himself perfectly between the circles. Cramer released a bullet one timer past MacDonald, making it 3-0 Powers 7 minutes into the second frame!  Powers continued to keep the play on the Oiler side of center ice seemingly for the entire period and MacDonald made several quality saves to keep the game 3-0. Powers out-shot the Oilers 16-7 during the 2nd period.

The Chargers started the 3rd period scoring less than 2 minutes in as a mad scramble ensued in from of the Oiler net. The goal was credited to Kyle Barbour after his point shot ricocheted off an Oiler defenseman’s leg then off of MacDonald and into the corner of the net extending the Powers lead to 4-0. Powers controlled the period as the Oilers had difficulty breaking out of there zone and dealing with the speed of the Powers forward units.  Tim Washburn added the final nail as Joey Carpenter fed him a beautiful backhand saucer pass from behind the Oiler net and Washburn snapped it by MacDonald ending the scoring at 5-0 Powers.  The Chargers went into a defensive prevent mode for the remaining 5 minutes, protecting the shut-out for Zloto making it memorable night for the graduating seniors! Powers out-shot the Oilers 14-6 in the 3rd period.

Powers Coach, Travis Perry commented that “this was a good win for us to keep the momentum going into the final game and playoffs. Our seniors all contributed and played well tonight.”  Powers will be home Friday night at 6pm for “Military Appreciation Night” with the final regular season game vs. Allen Park.
