Game Recap- Powers vs. Allen Park Jaguars (Jags) 2-21-2020

The Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was home Friday evening for “Military Appreciation Night” and to skirmish the Jaguars from Allen Park.  Powers prevailed with a 6-3 victory ending regular season play with a 16-7-2 record and a 3rd place finish in the Saginaw Valley League. Four Chargers had multiple point games led by Joey Carpenter with 4 points, Tim Washburn and Tommy Shubeck each had 3 points and Tyler Lawrence had 2 points.  Powers defenseman Jack Dawley earned his 1st career goal!

Powers would fire the first salvo off the stick of Tim Washburn 6 minutes into the 1st period, as he picked up a loose puck in front of Jags goalie Ioannis Moutzalias and tucked home his 17th goal of the season. Tommy Shubeck and Tyler Lawrence assisted on the Washburn goal.  Tyler Lawrence added his 9th of the season just 2 minutes later, picking up a Tommy Shubeck pass at center ice and bolted into the Jags zone, blistering a wrist shot high glove side on Moutzalias extending the Powers lead to 2-0.  But the Jags clawed back as Nathan Magier went coast to coast and snuck a backhander under Charger goalie Brennan Churchill cutting the lead to 2-1. However, Powers answered off the ensuing center ice face-off, marching into the Jags zone, Joey Carpenter spotted Washburn cutting to the net. Washburn’s first shot was stopped by Moutzalias, but following up on his own rebound, stuck a backhander up under the bar for his 18th of the season, making it 3-1 Chargers with just 5 minutes left in the period.  The Jags out-shot Powers 11-9 in the period.

Powers started the 2nd period short-handed and the Jags capitalized, as Joseph Mocnik set up from the right circle and his hard wrist-shot beat Churchill high glove side cutting the Powers lead to 3-2 just 30 seconds into the 2nd frame.  The teams battled back and forth for the next several minutes, exchanging body checks and scoring chances. The Jags however, capitalized on a turnover at center ice that created a 2-1 opportunity entering the Chargers zone. This time Mocnik found Zachary Yuhaz with a sneaky pass in-behind the Powers defense and he beat a defenseless Churchill to tie the game 8 minutes into the period. Powers countered less than 2 minutes later, as Tim Washburn chipped a loose puck at center ice, catching Joey Carpenter in stride on a break-away into the Jags zone. Carpenter would score his team leading 21st goal as he fired a low blocker side snap-shot giving Powers back the lead 4-3. Powers stole the momentum and caught the Jags napping as the attack continued resulting in another goal 4 minutes later.  This time, gritty Powers forward Tommy Shubeck pounced on a Joey Carpenter rebound and popped the water bottle for his 10th of the season making it 5-3 Powers! Then, with just under 4 minutes to play in the 2nd period, after a face-off win in the Jags zone, Jack Dawley scored a highlight reel goal after a pass from Tyler Lawrence.  Dawley cruised into the right circle and went bar down on Moutzalias for his first career goal!  Powers out-shot the Jags 13-7 in the 2nd period.

The 3rd period would see no scoring as Powers settled into a defensive style to protect the lead and end the regular season with a 6-3 victory.  The Jags out-shot Powers 10-9 in the 3rd period.

Coach Travis Perry commented, “this was a very challenging game tonight, good to see our guys persevere and come away with a victory.”   Powers will have a 1st round bye as the playoffs start 2-25-20.
