Game Recap- Powers vs. FNV Griffins 2-29-2020

After a 1st round bye to start the 2020 Division 3 playoffs, the Powers Catholic Chargers Varsity hockey team was home Saturday evening to take on the FNV Griffins. Powers dominated the Griffins with an impressive 8-1 victory in front of a packed house at Iceland Arena.  Seven Chargers had multiple point games led by Tim Washburn, Jacques Lavrack, Brenden Tarpening and Tyler Lawrence with 3 points, Tommy Shubeck, Jack Dawley and Joey Carpenter each had 2 point games.  Brent Zloto was steady between the pipes turning away 24 of 25 Griffin shots.

After a skittish start, a penalty kill and a few hold your breath moments denied by Powers goalie Brent Zloto, Powers settled in and carried the play the second half of the period. Looking like a team with purpose and a sense of playoff urgency, they stole the momentum on a beautiful goal by Brenden Tarpening.  Powers defenseman Jack Dawley started the play as he held the FNV blue line and fed Tyler Lawrence a pass along the left side boards. Lawrence’s snap-shot was redirected 10 feet in front of FNV goalie Gabe Fausnaugh by Tarpening, giving Powers the lead with just over 4 minutes left in the period. Then, after a holding call on FNV, Powers worked the man-advantage. Tim Washburn’s shot was initially stopped but the scrappy Jacques Lavrack, found the rebound and deposited a back-hander behind Fausnaugh extending the Powers lead to 2-0 with a minute left in the 1st frame.  Kyle Barbour also assisted on the Lavrack goal. Shots were even at 9 each for the 1st period.

Powers needed the penalty killers and Zloto to fend off three consecutive power plays by FNV in a choppy start to the 2nd period.  But, the Charger penalty killers turned the tide on FNV with a short-handed goal, while killing off the 3rd penalty with a goal by Tim Washburn. Tyler Lawrence picked up a loose puck along the side boards and hit a breaking Washburn in stride at center ice. Washburn cruised in from the FNV blue line and zipped a snap-shot low blocker side by Fausnaugh making it 3-0 Powers! Alex Washburn drew the 2nd assist on his brother’s short-handed goal.  Then, Powers struck again a minute later as Jacques Lavrack scored his 2nd of the night off a feed from Brenden Tarpening.  Lavrack’s point shot beat Fausnaugh high blocker side extending the lead to 4-0.  Powers wasn’t done, as Tyler Lawrence added to the lead after a face-off win by Tarpening in the FNV zone.  Lawrence snapped a laser high glove side making it 5-0 Powers!  FNV took two consecutive penalties with 1:05 left in the period giving Powers a 5-3 man-advantage.  Powers scored off the ensuing face-off as Tim Washburn added his 2nd of the period, backhanding a shot high over Fausnaugh. Tyler Lawrence and Jacques Lavrack added assists that ended the second period scoring at 6-0 Powers. Shots on goal for the period favored Powers 12-10.

Zloto’s bid for a shut-out was spoiled 5 minutes into the 3rd frame as Ryan Quackenbush finished off a 2-1 opportunity making it 6-1 Powers. But any hope of a monumental comeback was snuffed as Powers answered a minute later as Tommy Shubeck snuck a behind the net pass to Joey Carpenter in the slot. Carpenter made no mistake making it 7-1 Powers. Powers played prevent the rest of the way and ended the scoring on a power play goal by Gunnar Birmingham with 1:12 left in the contest. Tommy Shubeck and Jack Dawley added assists on the Birmingham goal.  Shots in the 3rd period were 9-6 Powers.

Coach Travis Perry commented, “Exciting way to start the playoffs- we controlled the play and capitalized on our chances.”   Powers will face Midland Dow Wednesday at 7pm at Iceland Arena.
