There is never a good loss in sports but last night’s loss the Chargers showed they can play with just about any team in the state. Catholic Central, with 13 seniors on the roster couldn’t shake the Chargers. Despite being outshot, Powers never wavered, kept battling the whole game. These types of losses build character for playoff time that begin in 10 days.

Catholic Central scored 13:57 into the 1st period for the only goal and the Chargers went to the locker room down a goal.

In the second period, the Chargers gave up a powerplay goal 1:19 into the second period to go down 2 to 0. That goal could have opened up the flood gates for the Shamrocks but the Chargers kept battling. At 9:22 of the 2nd period, Jack Dawley skated down the left side and wristed a shot past the Shamrock goalie to pull the Chargers within a goal heading in the final period.

In the 3rd period, Catholic Central scored on a powerplay to take a 3 to 1 lead with 13:57 left to play. Less than 2 minutes later with the Chargers on the power play, Mason Czarnecki blasted a wrist shot, top shelf to beat the Shamrock goalie pulling the Chargers within a goal with 12 minutes to play. Tyler Lawrence and Nolan Berner drawing the assists. The Chargers couldn’t get the equalizer though and Catholic Central sealed the game with an empty net goal with 40 seconds to play. Nick Kurtiak, made 34 saves and kept the Chargers in the game all night long with spectacular saves.

Powers Catholic returns to league play Saturday March 6th as they host Bay City at Iceland arena. The Chargers, with a win over Bay City will clinch the Saginaw Valley Conference regular season title. Powers will close out the 2021 regular season hosting Davison for senior night on Wednesday March 10th
