The stage was set Friday night as the Powers Catholic traveled to Midland to face Midland Dow in the Regional Final. Dow knocked Powers Catholic out of the playoffs in last years Regional Final at Iceland arena. Powers Catholic was looking to return the favor and earn their first Regional Championship since 2017.

The first period action was fast, both teams moving the puck up and down the ice. Midland Dow struck first with just over 5 minutes remaining in the first period and skated off with momentum and a 1 to 0 lead after the 1st period.

The second period was much of the same as the first, fast play. At 8:42 of the second period, Jacques Lavrack scored for the Chargers on the powerplay to tie the game at 1. Mason Czarnecki and Cooper Gerhardt drew the assist on the goal. The Chargers now had the momentum back on their side heading into the 3rd period.

In the 3rd period, both goalies played well keeping the score tied. Another seemingly momentum switch came at 10:27 of the 3rd period. The Chargers were called for roughing sending Dow on the power play with just over 6 minutes to play in the game. The Chargers had other thoughts about a momentum switch, just 12 seconds into Dow’s power play, Trey Carlock picked up a loose puck and sent a beautiful pass to a streaking Tyler Lawrence who broke in on the Dow goalie and sending the puck just over the goal line for a shorthanded goal and a 2 to 1 Powers Catholic lead. The Chargers would go on to kill the rest of the penalty preserving a 2 to 1 lead. A minute after killing the penalty, Jacques Lavrack drove down the left wing and slid a pass to Mason Czarnecki who put a backhand past the Dow goalie while on his knees cementing the win and a Regional Championship. Both Charger 3rd period goals were great team efforts, something this team has displayed all year long. Nick Kurtiak, continued his excellent play and made 21 saves.

Powers Catholic will next travel to Munn Ice Arena on MSU’s campus for the quarter finals against  Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
