Powers Moves on to the Final Four

The Powers Catholic Chargers cashed their ticket to the Division 3 hockey final 4 Friday March 25, 2021 with a 3 to 1 win over Grand Rapids Catholic Central (GRCC) Wednesday evening at Munn ice arena.

GRCC opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the game on a shot from the point that beat goaltender Nick Kurtiak who was screened on the shot.

The Chargers dominated the rest of the 1st period but find the back of the net until Mason Cznarnecki tipped a shot from Kyle Barbour on the power play to tie the score at 1 with 4:10 left in the first period. Tyler Lawrence also assisted on the goal.

2:10 seconds later with the Chargers on another power play Cooper Gerhardt found the back of the net to put the Chargers up 2 to 1 heading into the locker room after 1 period. Jacques Lavrack assisted on the go ahead goal.

In the 2nd period, GRCC came out of the locker room for the 2nd period and pressured the Chargers but could not put one past Kurtiak to tie the score. With 5:49 seconds left in the 2nd period Trey Carlock backhanded a shot over the shoulder of the GRCC goalie to put the Chargers up 3 to 1. Cooper Gerhardt picked up the assist on the Carlock goal.

The 3rd period saw the Chargers playing shorthanded a few times but the penalty killing unit kept GRCC power play unit scoreless and the Chargers held off GRCC for a 3 to 1 final. Nick Kurtiak made 19 saves sealing the victory for the Chargers.

Powers Catholic will travel to USA arena in Plymouth Friday morning at 10 am for a semi-final game against Cranbrook Kingswood.
