The night surely didn’t disappoint as the “house” was full! The local community came out supporting not only the Powers and Clarkston hockey teams but our Military/Law Enforcement/First Responders during “Appreciation Night”. It was refreshing to see a live student section and the excitement in the air! A great way to kick off Thanksgiving!

It took a little while for the Chargers to get that horsepower going as their first strike didn’t come until the 8-minute mark into the first period. The rest was downhill as the scoring spread throughout the roster consisting of 5 players each contributing 3 points apiece (Trey Carlock 2 G 1 A, Mason Czarnecki 2G 1A, Weston Reining 2 G 1A, Cooper Gerhardt 1G 2A, Brenden Tarpening 3A). In addition, 10 different Charger players provided helpers to those goals. The young (12 underclassmen) Clarkston squad simply was overpowered by Power’s high-octane offense.

During the first 7-8 minutes no real good opportunities presented themselves for either team until the 9:49 mark, when the first-year junior, on his first shift, the 6’ 3” 200lber Jacob Malenich wound up from the point trickling one between the sophomore netminder Parker Place’s leg pads. Notching the assists were Gerhardt and Sly (first career points for Malenich & Sly). Nolan Berner then took a tripping penalty at the blue line as the Wolves’ player tried to exit the defensive zone. The Chargers burned the penalty with the great hustle by first year junior Greg Feamster backchecking to prevent a breakaway. Interference penalty at 5:05 put Clarkston in the box. Less than a minute later, 4:18, a nice dime from Gerhardt to Czarnecki for the wrap around goal putting the Chargers up 2-0. Moments later, Feamster took 1 of his 2 penalties of the evening for tripping. Again, the Chargers burned the penalty. With 43 seconds remaining in the first period, the 137lber sophomore Sly muscling behind the net to keep the play alive dishing the biscuit out to the slot area. Czarnecki regained control setting up Reining for the third score closing out the period 3-0.

Just 15:55 into the 2nd period, Chargers won the draw back as Carlock possessed the puck sliding it over to Berner wristing it to the net making it 4-0. Less than 10 seconds later, Weston fired a slapshot from the top of circle beating Wolves’ Pace up top for his 2nd of night. Momentarily, the Wolves generated a couple good opportunities but were denied by Kurtiak as one of them was a complete rob of the glove. Chargers incurred a roughing penalty by Czarnecki at the 11-minute mark as the Wolves’ Devon Collis was able to take advantage sneaking one past Kurtiak’s right side putting Clarkston on the board. At 8:58, Power’s Kurtiak got called for interference sending the Wolves’ player to the ice. Soon after, Wolves’ Ron Wade capitalized on the power play giving Clarkston their 2nd and final goal. The 6th charger goal came at 7:00, a heads-up beautiful play originating by goaltender Nick Kurtiak passing to Tarpening at the Wolves’ blue line who immediately moved the puck to Lavrack with a one touch pass to Carlock for the bang bang finish. With 44 seconds remaining in the 2nd, the Chargers were burning off Cramer’s elbow penalty when Carlock bagged his second goal. Being shorthand, Carlock raced to the end line and intercepted the puck when Wolves’ goalie/defenseman miscommunicated.

The icing on the cake came on goals by Gerhardt and Czarnecki (2). Gerhardt banged home a rebound assisted by Salayko and Cramer. Czarnecki’s was a result of grabbing the puck out of air in the slot area blasting it by Parker Place assisted by Carlock and Tarpening.
