Powers hosted Howell (2-1-1) Wednesday evening not showing much mercy for the Highlanders despite Howell starting 5 of their 9 seniors. The Highlanders were coming off a recent victory over Canton 4-2 this past week. Chargers finished the night with 26 shots as goaltender Nick Kurtiak turned away all 11 Highlander shots earning him his first shutout of the season. The Chargers controlled play right off the opening faceoff leading to a quick opportunity turned away by the Highlander netminder and assistant captain Ean Badgett. The first of Powers’ four penalties came at the 15:40 mark when Weston Reinig made illegal head contact finishing his check in the offensive zone. Not until 7:52 into the first period, the Charger powerplay unit capitalized on the tripping penalty by senior Scott Pominville. The shorthand goal was Reinig’s 3rd of the season assisted by defenseman Kyle Barbour and forward Mason Czarnecki. Shortly thereafter, Cooper Gerhardt fed Jacob Malenich hitting his defensive partner Nolan Salayko parallel to the blue line to go up 2-0 to end the first period. As the Chargers continued the dominance, Czarnecki took a slashing penalty early into the second period as Howell put on some pressure but nothing to write home about. Each team traded a few more penalties and few more shots on goal that didn’t mount to much as the 2nd closed with no scoring. Just before the conclusion, Barbour took a holding penalty with 1:23 remaining. Starting the 3rd shorthanded, the Chargers were able to smolder any chances presented to the Highlanders. As the game continued with physical play, Reinig delivered a couple solid punishing hits. At 11:38, a quick snapper by Czarnacki (3rd of the season) in the slot putting the Chargers up 3-0 assisted by Nolan Berner and Trey Carlock. A crushing open ice hit by Howell’s senior defenseman Nathan Wilton on Barbour was called as a 5 min major-illegal head contact penalty. The Powers Chargers did not disappoint at 1:45 remaining when Jacque Lavrack closed the coffin with assists from Barbour and Reinig.
