CLAYTON TWP. (CCN) — Flint's Powers Catholic prep hockey team is in love with its home rink so far this season. The Chargers are now 3-0 at Flint Iceland Arenas where veteran Coach Travis Perry has watched his troops out-score their opponents by a whopping 19-2 margin.

With three non-league warm-ups behind them, Perry's Chargers now focus on Wednesday's (Dec. 8, 2021) Saginaw Valley opener at Bay City's arena against Bay City Western.

The hosts have also been impressive so far on the non-league trial. They've won 4-of-5 starts with the only loss coming on the road in their last start against highly regarded state powerhouse Traverse City St. Francis. The 5-0 defeat followed victories of 4-3 over Allen Park in overtime; 8-0 over Temperance Bedford and 5-3 over Chelsea in the Chelsea Thanksgiving Tournament; and 7-1 over Saginaw Swan Valley.

Chelsea was also one of the opponents for Powers, and the Chargers fared considerably better with a 6-0 romp. Trey Carlock's third goal of the season with 3:56 left in the opening period opened the scoring, and proved to be all goaltender Peyton Lenger needed for his first shutout of the season. His best save came with 10:36 left in the game when he thwarted a Chelsea breakaway attempt.

Brenden Tarpening scored twice for Powers against Chelsea while Cooper Gerhardt, Kyle Barbour and   Nolan Berner bagged the others.  Mason Czarnecki  added two assists and Barbour also set up a Powers goal.

Nick Kurtiak provided shutout goaltending in a 4-0 victory over Howell in the second start by Powers. The Chargers bombed Clarkston 9-2 in their opener.  Weston Reinig,  Nolan Salayko,  Czarnecki and  Jacques Lavrack  scored Powers Catholic's goals against Howell. Reinig also assisted on one goal and Czarnecki drew a pair of assists.

Five Chargers registered three-point games in the romp over Clarkston. Carlock, Czarnecki and Reining scored twice and added an assist apiece, Gerhardt had a goal and two assists while Tarpening had three assists.
