#1 Ranked Shamrocks Shutout Chargers

In a highly anticipated contest between perennial powerhouse Detroit Catholic Central (10-1) and Flint Powers Catholic (10-1) surely did not disappoint from Compuware arena Wednesday evening. The Shamrocks who compete in the MIHL-North were holding down the #1 ranked Division 1 high school spot in Michigan and the Chargers (#3 in D3) coming in at #5 in the Super Ten high school rankings, which consists of all divisions within the state. Both team’s goaltending duos yield the following jaw dropping save % (DCC .958 & Powers .944). The Shamrocks only loss this season was handed out by Ohio based Gilmour Academy Prep and the Chargers was from Riverview Gabriel Richard.

The first period was super intense with both teams throwing their bodies around along the glass and open ice. The coaching staff at Flint Powers had their boys ready to face the defending D1 state champion Shamrocks. The first 2/3 of the first period, Powers controlled possession and continued to disrupt any momentum the Shamrocks garnered. At the 5:49 mark, the first penalty was delivered to Powers Nolan Berner for tripping that was instantly exhausted. DCC quickly earned two back-to-back penalties giving Powers their first powerplay of the night that resulted in not one quality opportunity. The first period ended scoreless with DCC taking 7 shots and Powers 5.

Quickly into the second, DCC was called for their 3rd of their 9 penalties of the night. Powers again came up empty on the powerplay. Shortly thereafter, junior Landon West dangled the Powers defender going upper left post and inward to give DCC the lead. Powers had two 5 on 3 opportunities that resulted in just a few low percentage chances. Shots were DCC 6 and Powers 3. Soon into the 3rd period, Weston Reinig was issued a minor for slashing as Nick Kurtiak came up big turning away every Shamrock attempt. The chargers displayed a solid team effort nullifying the DCC man advantage. The battle carried on despite DCC controlling puck possession majority of the 3rd. With less than six minutes remaining, captain senior defenseman Carson Wood entered the Charger zone as the trailer, received the drop pass at the top of the slot lighting the lamp to close out a hard-fought match by both squads. DCC goaltender Nick Galda secured his 5th win stopping all 10 shots. Total Shots DCC 17 Powers 10
