Chargers steamroll Fenton/Linden

The Chargers hosted the Fenton/Linden Griffins Wednesday evening, drawing a full house, celebrating our community’s military and first responders. The Chargers continued their domination over one of the few local teams remaining in Genesee County.

It took a long winded ten+ minutes to pop the top before Chargers opened the flood gates. At the 6:13 mark, Cooper Gerhardt fed Mason Czarnecki on a counterattack originating from the neutral zone, to give the Chargers their first strike of the night. Prior to the first goal and despite the controlled puck possession in the Griffin zone, the Chargers seen many of their attempts fly over and wide of the net. The Charger steadfast penalty kill unit executed their one and only shorthanded situations on Adriaens hooking penalty. With 1:28 remaining in the first, defenseman Nolan Berner went coast to coast beating Griffin netminder Portor Lobocki lower left side. Shortly after, Czarnecki circled the Griffin net, setting up Weston Reinig who sauced a wrister through traffic landing in the upper corner.

Early into the second period, a very “filthy” 3 touch sequence by Czarnecki, Sly and Gerhardt, said Coach Perry. Czar crossed the blue line entering the Griffin zone with a quick drop to Sly, then Sly immediately hitting Gerhardt on a diagonal going hard to the right side of the net, making no mistake to lift the Chargers 4-0. Less than a minute later, sophomore Andrew Burny lit the lamp from the right offensive circle giving him his first high school goal. As the gates remained opened, Sly picked up a pass from Kyle Barbour in the slot sliding it by the Griffin netminder. The seventh goal of the night came by senior defenseman Jack Dawley assisted by newcomer Tom Lavoie. Dawley demonstrated good patience sizing up the goaltender, drifting between the hash marks then burying the snapper! To close out the mercy with the 8th goal coming in the 2nd period, Gerhardt netted his 2nd of the night muscling his way into the crease to call it an early night. Both Barbour (2) and Czarnecki (3) assisted on Gerhardt’s night cap.

Splitting the duties between the pipes were both Nicholas Kurtiak and Peyton Lenger
