Bulldogs Deliver Chargers A Reality Check!

On a brisk Saturday afternoon at Flint Iceland arena, the Flint Powers Chargers encountered their worst lost in nearly two years in a 4-1 defeat. The Byron Center Bulldogs arrived in Flint in undefeated fashion, currently ranked #3 in the D2 division. The Bulldogs most recently were state runners-up in 2021.

The Bulldogs attempted to draw first blood just five minutes into the first period. However, senior netminder Nicholas Kurtiak stopped both back to back shots short side with right leg pad as Byron tried to jam a quick one in. Sophomore defender Jaxson O’Keefe of Byron drew the first penalty of the afternoon. The Chargers attempted to capitalize with two different penalty kill units but could only muster a couple turnovers. At the 5:11 mark, the Chargers Michael Tucker was sent to the penalty box for tripping. The Bulldogs did not waste any time, taking full advantage of their powerplay. Team leading senior forward Logan Nickolaus continued his scoring streak letting one rip from the point finding its way past Kurtiak.

The trend carried on through the 2nd period as both teams went back and forth displaying clean but physical play. Byron Center took their 5th penalty of the contest with 4:28 remaining in the 2nd period. The Chargers team point leader Mason Czarnecki squared it up at one a piece with Gerhardt and Sly getting the helpers. With the Bulldogs shorthanded, their junior forward Jackson Froysland snuck by the Charger defender, getting his own rebound beating Kurtiak to once again to steal the lead. Nearly halfway through the 3rd period, Bulldogs O’keefe struck again when netminder Kurtiak gambled on playing a puck outside of his crease having to make a diving attempt but unsuccessful. The Bulldogs closed out defeating the Chargers when Logan Nickolaus netted his 2nd of the afternoon receiving a dish from the corner executing a snapper top shelf.
