The University Liggett Knights from Gross Pointe Woods, journeyed to Flint Iceland arena this past Saturday, to find out how they would measure up against Genesee County’s most dominant club, the Flint Powers Catholic Chargers (9-1). Liggett (9-3) has performed well thus far, playing in the Metro League (East) against likes of Detroit Country Day, Gabriel Richard, Allen Park, Woodhaven and Gibraltar Carlson. Soon as the puck dropped, it did not take long for either club to start throwing their weight around. Within three minutes into the first period, both teams traded trips to the penalty box. The Chargers would strike first on a nicely executed snapshot from the slot by senior Mason Czarnecki, burying it by Knights netminder Maksim Johns (assists Tucker/Sly). At 7:41, a Charger giveaway presented netminder Nicholas Kurtiak with a great opportunity to prevent the Knights from lighting up the scoreboard. Kurtiak stood tall and meet the challenge! A similar situation transpired moments later, when seniors Cooper Gerhardt and Weston Reinig picked up the loose puck on a Knights miscalculation but were denied by Johns.

The fast and physical play continued through both the second and third periods. The Chargers found themselves shorthanded in a 3v5 situation on back-to-back penalties from Michael Tucker and Greg Feamster. With a nice joint effort, the PK unit distinguished both penalties. At the 7:23 mark of the 2nd, Kevin Adriaens moved the puck to Kyle Barbour who delivered a dime to the back door for Jack Siwek to light the lamp. The Siwek goal ended the scoring for the afternoon, as the (10-1) Chargers will now head north to compete in Traverse City showcase during their annual father/son trip.

Nicholas Kurtiak shut out the Knights stopping 17 shots to earn his 7th win.
