The winner of the Saginaw Valley League conference was determined in a midweek thriller between the Midland Chemics (15-5-1) and the host Flint Powers Chargers (16-6). An exciting evening of mix emotions as the Powers Chargers’ seniors were honored with a special send off by their family, friends and local community prior to puck drop. In return, the players gave their loved ones and fan base a night to remember, as they tied up the game in the last 55 seconds, knocking off the Chemics in overtime to host the SVL trophy for third consecutive year.

The highlight of the first period came at the 2:58 mark. Senior defenseman Jack Dawley possessed the puck near the left face-off dot, performing a little deke on the Chemic defender, sniping it by netminder Aidan O’Malley.

The greatest opportunity garnered by the Chargers in the 2nd period, presented itself when Cooper Gerhardt assembled a wrister off the Chemics crossbar. Then, the Chemics notched two back-to-back tallies to steal the lead.

With the Chargers trailing by one entering the 3rd period, “Mr. Utility” Weston Reinig, provided the equalizer slipping into the Chemic zone all alone striking the upper left corner. The Chemics bounced right back as the Chargers left the back door open. As many spectators and players started to envision victory in the rearview mirror, the Chargers point leader Mason Czarnecki did what he does best. Czar received an unselfish dish from Reinig and simply buried his 23rd goal of the year with only 55 seconds left to send it to overtime. In overtime, Dawley displayed great patience skating down the left side of the Chemic zone, drawing the defender and saucing the dime over to junior Jack Siwek for the game winner.

Nicholas Kurtiak earned his 13th victory between the pipes. Powers will travel to face a stout Livonia Stevenson squad on Friday before preparing for the playoffs Feb 25th.
