The Powers Chargers completed their 25 regular season game schedule this past weekend down at the Lakeland ice arena. The home of their opponent White Lake Lakeland Eagles (19-4-1) who compete in the Lakes Valley Conference.

With head coach Travis Perry in his 18th year at the helm, the program has now recorded 18+ victories in 12 seasons, with the come from behind victory over the Eagles Saturday night. Last year the Chargers underestimated the undefeated Eagles who stole the game in Flint 2-1.

This year with the Eagles presenting six players (double digit) who can put the puck in the net were a little more cautious. In addition to the offensive power, the Eagles roster one of the better netminders in the state (senior Paul Baker .930 save %), despite playing vs mediocre competition.

There was nothing too impressive for either club in the scoreless first period. The Chargers were challenged all night on the power-play 0/5 similar to the Eagles 0/4. The Eagles netminder did stand tall turning aside early scoring attempts from the Chargers Caleb Doll and Ayden Cook.

At 8:06 of the second period, the Eagles notched their one and only goal of the evening. The Eagles forward received a drop pass inside the right circle, shooting it by a screened Blake Zloto to the back of the cage. The Chargers and Eagles continued to trade off power-play and penalty kill possessions. At 7:02, junior Andrew Burny was called for a controversial (spearing) five-minute major-game misconduct. The Chargers were fortunate to come out unscathed heading into the 3rd period.

At the 11:00 mark of the third period, senior Doll kick started the lighting of the lamps for the Chargers. Doll entered the Eagle zone, near the perimeter of the left circle and launched the puck over the trapper of Baker. Less than a minute later, sophomore Cook (Chargers point leader) slithered his way by the Eagles defender, sniping Baker glove side to bump the Chargers 2-1. The Chargers high flying junior Landon Miller took his crack at Baker on a clear cut breakaway but was denied. At 6:50, Zloto protected the “house” when the Eagles forward snuck in attempting to get the equalizer after turning the Charger defender inside and out. Then at 4:32 of the third, defenseman Andrew Parmentier skated across center ice to dump the puck for a line change and the puck took a favorable Charger bounce, slipping between the goaltender’s leg pads to make it 3-1. Finally, with just over a minute remaining, the Chargers Brendan Sly grabbed the neutral zone turnover on a shin pad block from Andon Harwood, snapped a laser off the top shelf iron to seal the deal.
