Powers Discharge the Generals

Genesee Generals @ Flint Powers

Saturday 12/28/2024 @ 3:00pm

Crosstown adversaries Genesee Generals and Flint Powers met to battle at the 810 Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Powers Hockey Alumni tournament was played at Crystal Field House on Friday with a great attendance. Saturday celebrated the hockey-playing alumni of Powers with a quiet event prior to puck drop. Lots of fans, friends and family filled the “810” to capacity as the Chargers and Generals prepared to compete for another year of bragging rights. Many of the players grew up learning the game and playing on the same teams for years. There was a set of twins (Ayden and Avery Cook) playing against each other, taking the competition to another level. The atmosphere was similar to a Michigan/Michigan State rivalry game.

The Chargers wore the home whites and Genesee wore red. With tensions high, the puck dropped and the battle began. The Generals struck first at 14:35 as a skater drove wide and slid the puck over to a breaking teammate that snuck behind the Chargers defense. A minute later Owen Perry capped off a play from Landon Miller and Anderw Burny to tie the game. Immediately off the puck drop, Miller broke in for a quick shot but was turned away. Powers then successfully battled through two penalties, one assessed to Andrew Parmentier (11:41 Cross Check), the other called on Ayden Cook (10:04 roughing) when he collided with the opposing goaltender, who in dramatic fashion did his best to draw additional minutes on Cook. The result was the Generals backup goalie taking over. Genesee cranked up the pressure during the final two minutes, but Powers goalie Hunter Clark held strong. The period closed with a Brody Neelands top shelf blast off a faceoff won by Parmentier and a screen in front. Powers led 2-1.

Second period action began mostly in the Genesee zone. The boys must have really enjoyed the grind as there were various salutations and hand gestures being exchanged…just like old times. Chargers’ defenseman Cooper Massimino made an end-to-end rush taking the puck deep into the Genesee zone waiting for reinforcements to arrive. At 12:01 of the second Miller put away a rebound off an Ethan Haley shot from the right side hashmarks. Thirty seconds later Neelands and a former teammate got tangled up for a pair of offsetting penalties. As those penalties expired, Gavin Vorwerk was called for interference, putting the Chargers well-oiled penalty kill to work – controlling the puck for most of the two minutes. After the penalty concluded, the Generals gained control and managed to get a puck past Clark for their second goal of the contest at 5:37. Powers quickly countered when Parker Bendall threaded a pass to Cook for the final goal of the period at 4:03. With the clock winding down, Andon Harwood was drawn into a tussle with a feisty General for a pair of coincidental roughing calls at 1:12. Powers with a 4-2 lead at the end of 2.

Powers came out of the locker room fired up as Neelands sent a pass to Haley who then hit Cook to surprise an unprepared Generals goalie with a top-shelf snipe taking the score to 5-2 Powers just 14 seconds into the period. The even-up back and forth continued until Burny was called for head contact at 12:02. The Chargers’ PK squad once again went to work and stymied the visitors’ man advantage. Powers ramped up the pressure after the penalty, but Burny landed back in the box taking a General with him as they tangled down at the Genesee net. The Chargers controlled the puck for the next several minutes. Perry carried the puck up the ice taking the zone. The freshman shuffled a pass to Burny down low then to Parmentier in front for the top-shelf, blocker-side dart and goal with 3:23 remaining. Less than two minutes to go, Chase Stevens was called for interference as he used his body to prevent his man from reaching the puck. It was a hectic end to the game, but the Chargers came out on top 6-2.

Notable point getters – Goals: Cook-2, Perry, Neelands, Miller, Parmentier. Assists: Burny-2, Haley-2, Bendall, Cook, Perry, Parmentier, Neelands, Miller. Clark turned away 17 of 19 shots. Powers had 47 shots on the Generals netminder. The power play produced 0 goals in 2 attempts but the Chargers successfully killed all five shorthanded situations.

Next up, Super 10 ranked Howell (#4) at the 140 Ice Den on Saturday 1/4/25 @ 4:00pm.
