After a humbling road loss to Howell on Saturday, Powers Hockey was determined to get back on the winning track with an SVL league game against the visiting Midland Dow Chargers Wednesday evening at the 810 Sports Complex. Entering the contest league records: Powers 2-0-0, Dow 3-0-0. This would be the battle between two teams favored to win the SVL title.

Dow won the opening faceoff, routed the puck into the Powers zone and maintained control for a short time. The roles reversed as Dow was forced to defend against a threatening Powers offense. Three minutes into the meeting the teams settled down and the flow of play began to favor the home team. Landon Miller broke loose for a breakaway on the Dow goalie but was denied. Ninety seconds later Whit Park dropped a dime pass to Owen Perry at the far blueline but the play was called offside. The Powers defense was doing their best to help create offensive opportunities but were jammed too many times trying to skate the puck out of the zone, and it almost cost them. Dow was very aggressive on the forecheck. With 9:10 remaining in the first period, Powers got caught with too many men on the ice and were assessed a penalty. The very effective penalty-kill unit took the ice and killed off the only infraction of the period. As the penalty expired, Jack Johnson made a really smart pass off the boards to a breaking Miller for another quality chance. Powers was gaining momentum as Ayden Cook sauced a pass to Perry for a strike that didn’t quite connect. At the two-minute mark Dow broke the ice with an unassisted goal that exploited a Powers failed clearing attempt. Hunter Clark deflected the first shot behind the net, but Dow recovered the puck and banked it off Clark’s back for the goal. The resilient Powers squad worked the puck back into the Dow zone and a tic-tac-toe passing play between Parker Bendall and Cook resulted in an easy tap-in for Bendall to even the score to 1-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period began much the way the first ended, fast and physical. Finally, at 12:18 Dow was called for roughing and the Chargers powerplay went to work. Just a few seconds of man-advantage, the puck rotated from Cook to Perry to Andrew Burny for the one-timer and goal. Powers took control and at 9:39 Andrew Parmentier punched in the third goal on a beauty of a pass from Jordan Davis and Burny. Three minutes later Dow took another penalty. Powers had almost thirty seconds of delayed call to work before whistle blew and the powerplay unit took the ice. Determined to make them pay again, the passes went from Parmentier to Cook who fed Burny on the far side for another one-timer to light the lamp at 6:01. Powers up 4-1. Mitchel Lenger got called for hooking at 5:20, but then Dow was called for roughing at 4:32 to make it 4-on-4 play for about a minute. With Powers on the man-advantage Cook and Burny connected once again for a prime opportunity, but was denied by an acrobatic save from the Dow netminder. Following the penalties, the five-man unit of Johnson, Miller, Gavin Vorwerk, Andon Harwood and Aiden Olah kept the pressure on Dow and shut them down. With only 1:34 left in the second stanza Harwood and a Dow forward tussled and went off for roughing. Dow took advantage of the last minute of play to tighten the score with goals at 0:59 and again at 0:36 to bring the score to 4-3 heading into the second intermission.

The teams hit the ice for the final period with the game on the line. Dow made the first mistake when they were caught with too many men on the ice. That didn’t slow Dow as they notched a short-handed goal at 13:38 to tie the game at 4 but were immediately assessed a 5-minute major penalty for roughing. Powers had the advantage for thirty-five seconds before Ethan Haley was called for interference. Brody Neelands hustled back to make a huge backcheck to break up a Dow rush while playing four to a side. When the penalty expired Powers went to work on the powerplay as Parmentier fed Perry then to Cook who finished with a second effort, spin-a-rama goal to take the lead with 0:57 remaining in the major penalty. Vorwerk, ferociously forechecking, went to the ice behind the Dow net and the visitors were called for tripping at 4:38. Just as the home team was setting up the powerplay, Cook was called for interference. The seconds ticked off the clock. Dow walked a Powers D-man for a dangerous shot, but

Clark stood tall and negated the chance at 0:43 and Powers cleared. Unfortunately, it was icing and the call brought the faceoff back to the right of Clark with 0:34 before the buzzer. Powers won the draw and safely cleared the zone as time ran out…victory going to the Powers Chargers 5-4 (12-1-0 overall, 3-0-0 SVL)

Notable point getters – Goals: Bendall, Burny-2, Parmentier, Cook. Assists: Cook-3, Perry-2, Parmentier-2, Jordan Davis, Burny. Clark turned away 18 of 22 shots. Powers had 30 shots on the Dow goaltender. The power play produced 3 goals and the Chargers successfully killed all penalties.

Next up, the Chargers travel to the Southfield Sports Arena Ice Rink to face Detroit Country Day Yellowjackets on Saturday 1/11/25 @ 4:00pm.
