Chargers sting DCD Yellowjackets

On the road and looking to continue a new win streak, the Chargers met Detroit Country Day Yellowjackets at the Southfield Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon. The boys from Powers were focused and ready to send a message to a perennial competitor. The last few years have seen tempers fly both on the ice and on the bench when these teams met. The stage was set for an exciting matinee game.

DCD won the initial draw, but it was all Powers after that. During the first three minutes Ethan Haley (first game at forward) nets a low glove-side goal on an off-the-glass pass from Blake Dawson. At 8:32 Ayden Cook was called for roughing and headed to the penalty box. Powers killed off the penalty giving up only a few shots from the perimeter. The penalty didn’t cost Powers a goal against, but it did cost Brody Neelands another broken stick. At 5:30 the Chargers went on the power play where Andrew Burny (from Cook) connected with Andrew Parmentier for the goal at 4:52. On the celebration of Parmentier’s goal Parker Bendall was assessed an unsportsmanlike penalty… putting Powers on the PK. Never fear! Aggressive forechecking from Cook forced a turnover as he gained possession for a short-handed tally. As the period ended Andon Harwood found Owen Perry to make the score 4-0.

Second period action started immediately after the puck dropped. Cook found Bendall in the slot to light the lamp. Powers went back on the power play thanks to a DCD trip at 13:37. The Chargers took many shots, but didn’t find the twine. Back at full strength for a minute and a half, Jack Johnson was called for a high-sticking infraction that was successfully killed. The mid-point of the period saw the line of Mitch Lenger, Chase Stevens, Jordan Davis, Whit Park and Cooper Massimino give the Jackets all the pressure they could handle as the Chargers kept the puck in DCD’s zone. An ineffective power play opportunity held the score at 5-0 to end the period.

Returning from the second intermission, DCD was called for roughing at 13:33 affording Powers another power play. The man-advantage was nullified when Cook took a roughing penalty a few seconds into the power play. While the teams competed 4-on-4, Perry gained control and drifted the puck over the shoulder of the DCD goaltender (12:19). JJ Davis carried the puck into the DCD zone heading toward the net but a tackled (no call). Seconds later Neelands slipped a pass to Landon Miller for the snipe making it 7-0. The game ended as Aiden Olah found Stevens who hit Lenger for the 8th and game-ending goal with 5:18 remaining in the third period.

Powers goals by Haley, Parmentier, Cook, Perry (2), Bendall, Miller, Lenger.

Powers Goalies split the chore - Clark played 23:00 and turned away 5 shots. Aiden Gustafson logged 24:00 minutes and turned away 3 shots. Powers had 42 shots on the DCD goaltenders. The power play produced 1 goal and the Chargers successfully killed all penalties.

Next up, the Chargers travel to the Upper Peninsula for the Father/Son weekend and will face Byron Center Friday @ 6:00pm and Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils on Saturday @ 3:00pm – both games at Big Bear Arena (Chi Mukwa).

See you at the rink…
