Annually Powers Hockey hits the road to play a pair of games for a Father/Son weekend filled with memories. This year the destination was Sault Ste Marie, MI. The team travelled north by bus to compete against 2024 Division 2 State Champs Byron Center and Sault Ste Marie Blue Devils. Both games were expected to be extremely competitive and help the team ramp up for even tougher games coming up. The venue was Big Bear Arena (Chi Mukwa) on the East side of town.
The first game of the weekend was BC. After battling through a scoreless first period, the Chargers came out rolling in the second with four unanswered goals. The scoring started with a ripper by Landon Miller who caught a pass from Chase Stevens at 10:44. Two short minutes later, Jack Johnson was fed by Miller and Stevens for the second Powers goal. At 6:51 Andrew Parmentier and Owen Perry combined passes to feed Andrew Burny to light the lamp. Parker Bendall was called on a coincidental minor when he tangled with a BC D-man after the goal. Less than a minute later Ethan Haley was called for a 2-minute misconduct- leaving the Chargers a man short for about a minute and fifteen seconds. At 4:28 Perry was called for slashing. Then BC found the twine for their first and only marker of the night at 4:04. A minute later Ayden Cook, unassisted, lifted the Chargers to a 4-1 lead ending the period.
The third period was all Powers. The Chargers final goal was scored at 6:48 by Cook with assists going to Burny and Bendall. Hunter Clark made his job look easy, turning away 15 of 16 shots. Powers looked very strong with everyone contributing for the win. Final score Powers 5 – BC 1.
On Saturday, the boys faced the home team, with the arena packed full of local fans- all pulling for the Blue Devils. Talk about being outnumbered… With the ice clean, fast, and ready for action, the puck dropped. On his first shift of the night Landon Miller found the twine off passes from Andon Harwood and Brody Neelands at 15:05. The period moved to more of a back-and-forth game until Brody Neelands fired the puck to Owen Perry who found Andrew Parmentier for the lamplighter with 6:40 remaining. Parker Bendall was called for hooking at 4:13 and the penalty kill of Powers was successful in killing the infraction. First period score Powers 2 – Soo 0.
When the second period started the rolls reversed. This time the Blue Devils drew first blood at 16:22. Whit Park was called for interference at 13:05. The Chargers couldn’t hold off the Soo’s attack as they slipped one past Clark at 11:34 to even the score at 2. Powers fought through two more penalties before the second period ended (Parmentier – coincidental rough 8:05 and Ethan Haley – roughing 7:00). Third period action continued, but neither team could connect for a goal. With a minute and a half remaining Ayden Cook was called for a 5-minute major “Sloo Foot” penalty. The period ended in a 2-2 tie and headed to overtime with Powers shorthanded for 3:32.
The Blue Devils capitalized on the man-advantage and ended the game at the 6:44 mark of overtime.
Chargers split the weekend 1-1 against two tough teams.
Next up, the Chargers face Bay City on Wednesday for an SVL match-up at the 810 Sports Complex and Division 3 (#1 Ranked) Orchard Lake St Mary’s at the Eaglets’ home ice on Friday for a 7:30 puck drop. It should be a doozy.
See you at the rink…
