Flint Powers struck quickly with three goals in the first period and cruised to an 8-0 shutout win over Okemos in a Division 3 regional semifinal Wednesday at Iceland Arena.

Connor Owen scored twice and had two assists as Powers improved to 19-6-1 overall. Powers faces Big Rapids in the regional finals on Saturday at 3 p.m. Big Rapids defeated the FNV Griffins, 2-0, in the other Division 3 semifinal.

"I thought we came out moving our feet pretty well," Powers coach Travis Perry said. "Getting three goals was big in the first period. Defensively we gave up a few more chances than we wanted to, but all you want to do with these games is win and move on, and that's what we did."

The two goals from Owen led the scoring machine, which also had goals from Garrett Gormley, Derek Simon, Alex Broadworth, Mike Forman, Dan DeLong and Cooper Skarzynski to feed it.

"Connor is a grinder," Perry said. "He's our second leading goal scorer. He finds the right spots in front of the net, and he put together another solid night."

Owen now has 55 points on the season with the four he earned on Wednesday.

Spencer Owen and Brendan Smith each had two assists for Powers.

Austin Kane turned back 17 shots in the shutout victory.

Flint Powers beat Big Rapids by the same 8-0 score earlier in the season, but Perry is anticipating a solid performance this time around.

"I am expecting a better game," Perry said. "Big Rapids is always a strong team and it is well-coached."
