The Flint Powers Catholic boys hockey team's 20th victory of the season also meant the Chargers won their 31st regional championship.

Powers Catholic defeated Big Raids 7-1 on Saturday at Iceland Arena in Flint. Jeff Polakowski scored twice and had two assists to lead Powers Catholic, and teammate Mike Forman added a goal and two assists.

"Our big thing was to get out to a quick start and get a bunch of shots on net," Powers Catholic coach Travis Perry said. "Offensively, I think we have a lot more fire power this year than last year. We're getting contributions from a lot of guys and I think we're gelling at the right time."

Powers Catholic led 7-0 after two periods before Brad Walling got Big Rapids on the board with an assist from Evan Monko. Big Rapids goaltender Joey Heinz made 28 saves, while Austin Kane made 14 for Powers Catholic.

"I was really proud of the kids and the effort. Powers is certainly a very talented team," Big Rapids coach Tim Blashill said. "I thought we held up against them in the third period. We've had an up and down season for sure, but I was proud of our run in the tournament."

Big Rapids (5-17-2), shorthanded coming into the game because of concussions, lost Preston Hughes and Garrett Garner in the second period. Hughes suffered an undisclosed injury, however Garner bit off part of his tongue and will need to have it reattached.

Powers Catholic (20-6-1) will face the winner of the Grand Rapids Christian/Forest Hills Central matchup at 7:20 p.m on Wednesday, Mar. 5 at The Summit in Lansing.
