Two heavyweights in their respective divisions: Flint Powers Catholic ranked No. 2 in Division 3 and Detroit U of D Jesuit, No. 4 in Division 1 fought tooth, nail and claw before a large crowd at the Crystal Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. Powers was riding a 6 game win streak; U of D were winners of 5 in a row including a victory over No. 1 Novi Catholic Central on Friday. The game would include a total of 17 penalties including a rare 10-minute unsportsmanlike conduct call on a U of D goalie, which required them to bring in a back-up. Despite multiple misdeeds, only one power play goal was scored during the game. Powers would open the scoring at 6:14 of the 1st, when Junior forward Conor Witherspoon rushed the puck coast-to-coast to gain the zone. Witherspoon dished off to line mate Junior forward Chase Knoblock, who sauced it right back to Witherspoon. The junior chipped it over the shoulder of the U of D goalie. Powers would go to intermission with a 1-0 lead. At 6:41 of the 2nd, U of D’s Captain Senior forward Sam Knoblauch would even the game at 1-1 on an assist by Senior defenseman Andrew Nasr. The 2nd period came to a close with the score tied at 1-1. Powers reclaimed the lead at 12:28 of the 3rd on a goal by Chase Knoblock with assists from Freshman forward Mason Weiss and Conor Witherspoon. A mere 23 seconds later, U of D answered with an unassisted goal by Sam Knoblauch. And 37 seconds later, U of D took the lead on a goal by Andrew Nasr with assists from Knoblauch and Junior forward Max Denomme. At this point, the outlook was grim for the Chargers. However, bad behavior presented Powers with an opportunity. With U of D short- handed due to an ill-timed penalty, Witherspoon, coming from behind the net, took a pass from Sophomore forward Cam Lieffers and whistled a shot over the U of D goalie’s shoulder from the high slot to tie the game at 3-3 at 3:32 of the 3rd. Regulation time ended with the score tied 3 all. Overtime ensued. At 7:28, Powers went on the power play as a U of D player went off for tripping. Despite the man advantage, the Chargers were unable to score. Powers would have a second power play opportunity at 1:59 of the overtime, but, again, were unable to get the puck past U of D’s goaltender. U of D had numerous chances too, all of which were repelled by Powers senior goalie Patrick Hoedeman. Flint Powers resumes play Wednesday at 6:00 in a Saginaw Valley league game versus Bay City.
