The Flint Powers Catholic Chargers trekked to Ohio last weekend for their annual Father-Son trip. The Chargers took on Gilmour Academy last Friday evening and Lake Catholic Saturday afternoon.

IRONMONGERS

The Friday contest resulted in a 4-0 victory over Gilmour Academy. Senior goaltender Patrick Hoedeman pitched the shut-out. The game was remarkable for the fact that the Powers squad hit the post or crossbar six times during the game. Junior forward Chase Knoblock kicked off the scoring for Powers with a goal at 13:05 of the 1st. Junior defenseman Mac Diver had the assist. Conor Witherspoon scored a power play goal at 4:49 with assists from Junior forward Brendan Smith and Freshman forward Mason Weiss. Powers 2, Gilmour 0 after 1 period of play. Neither team scored in the 2. At 13:40 of the 3rd, Sophomore forward Josh Warda recorded the first of his two goals on the night. Warda was assisted by Junior forward Noah Reeser and defenseman Mac Diver (his second helper of the night). Powers’ final goal of the game came at 3:07 when Josh Warda lit the lamp a second time with assists from Senior forward Charlie Start and Freshman defenseman Carson Snyder.

BIZARRE PROCEEDINGS

Powers managed to eke out a win versus Lake Catholic High School at the Mentor Ice Arena in what can only be described as an amazingly bizarre game that ended in a bizarre fashion.

Neither team managed a goal in the 1st period. Powers began the 2nd period on the wrong side of a 5 on 3 with two players in the box with both penalties, a hooking call and a slash, both of which were called at :14 of the 1st period on two separate players. In a beautiful display of intransigence, Junior forward Brendan Smith scored an unassisted short-handed goal. At 11:42, Mr. Smith checked in with his second goal of the game with an assist from Freshman defender Carson Snyder. Lake Catholic’s Aaron Valentine scored a power play goal on an assist from Kyle Horvath at 8:24. Lake Catholic’s next goal occurred, technically, at even strength when Kyle Horvath found the back of the net at 3:15. Luke Prpic provided assistance. Lake Catholic took the lead at 3-2 on another power play goal at 1:30 of the 2nd with Powers forward Brendan Smith in the box for 4 minutes for a combo platter penalty of high sticking and cross-checking. Lake Catholic’s goal was scored by Kyle Horvath, his second, with assists from Cole Horvath and Ryan Bruss.

In the 3rd, Senior forward Charlie Start scored an unassisted goal at 6:30 to tie the game at 3-3. And then the strangest play of the year occurred, when, with 11 seconds left in the game, Lake Catholic pulled its goalie. Powers forward Cam Lieffers took a pass from defenseman Mac Diver and got behind the Lake Catholic defense. With a wide open empty net beckoning, the Lake Catholic defender took Lieffers down from behind before he was able to release his shot. The initial signal from the referee was to award Lieffers a penalty shot; however, upon further consultation, Powers was awarded a goal at :01 of the 3rd period to make it 4-3.
