The Flint Powers Chargers traveled to the Great White North to take part in the annual D3 Challenge in Gaylord over the weekend and managed to come away with two wins. Stellar goaltending and timely goals made the difference.

POWERS VS. FOREST HILLS CENTRAL

Powers opened their weekend with a game versus the Forest Hills Central Rangers in match-up featuring two of the ranked Division 3 schools. Forest Hills features a hard-skating, skilled team with excellent goaltending. The two teams sparred for the first period with quality chances for both sides; however, both the Chargers’ Brady Stebbins and the Rangers’ Carl Mielock refused to yield as the first ended in a scoreless tie.

The Rangers ended the scoring drought at 5:06 of the second period when forward Nico Withey managed to get one past Mr. Stebbins with assists from forward Zach Currie and defenseman Nick Sarjeant. Powers got on the board at 13:55 on a Conor Witherspoon rocket from high slot thanks to line mates Brendan Smith and Mason Weiss. A minute and half or so later, senior forward Brendan Smith netted a power play goal, which proved to be the game winner, with assists from senior forward Jon Thomas and senior defenseman Jake Polakowski.

POWERS VS. DIVINE CHILD

On Saturday, the Chargers faced off against the Divine Child Falcons in the first meeting between the teams in recent years. Powers opened the scoring in the first period with a brilliant short-handed goal by junior forward Christian Wentworth at 10:51. With Powers on the wrong side of a 5 on 3, senior Captain  Jake Polakowski corralled a loose puck and found Wentworth near center ice. Mr. Wentworth made a nice move to elude a Ranger skater and slipped it past the goalie for the Chargers first goal of the game. At 15:32, junior defenseman Carson Snyder scored his first goal with an assist from senior forward Joe Schunck. Nine seconds later, junior forward Mason Weiss scored with assists from line mates Conor Witherspoon and Brendan Smith to make 3-0 in favor of Powers.

At 12:02 of the second period, senior defenseman Garrett Johnson continued his torrid scoring pace with a power play goal. Junior forward Cam Conover assisted on the Johnson goal. Powers went to the break up 4-0.

Thirty-two seconds into the third period, the Falcons broke the ice (pun intended) with a goal by forward Vincenzo DiDomenico. Divine Child defenseman Sean Duffany assisted. Powers senior forward Conor Witherspoon closed out the scoring for Powers at 7:26 with an even-strength goal to make it 5-1 Powers. Forwards Brendan Smith and Mason Weiss assisted on the Witherspoon goal.

Next up for Powers is a trip to Saginaw on Wednesday when they take on the powerhouse Saginaw Heritage Hawks.
