Powers Prevails at Catholic Showcase

The Flint Powers Chargers journeyed to Grand Rapids over the weekend to participate in the Catholic School Showcase. The Chargers managed to come away with victories over Holy Name High School and Walsh Jesuit.

Flint Powers 9  Holy Name 1

The Chargers faced off against Holy Name in the opener on Friday evening. Holy Name took the initiative and scored the first goal of the game at 13:58. Forward Justin Sill buried it with assistance from Sean Bauchens and Brennan Dickey. The Chargers waited until 8:21 to score. Sophomore forward Luke Evo put the power play biscuit in the basket with the assistance of sophomore forward Mason Weiss and senior forward Brendan Smith. Weiss came back with 59 seconds left with another power play goal with assists from Luke Evo and senior forward Conor Witherspoon. Fourteen seconds later, Luke Evo buried his second goal of the game. Brendan Smith and senior captain Jake Polakowski had the assists on Evo’s power play tally. The teams went to intermission with score being 3-1 in favor of the Chargers.

In the second period, Flint went to work quickly with a goal by senior forward Noah Reeser at 15:44. Senior forward Chase Knoblock and sophomore defenseman Josh Warda assisted on the Reeser goal. At 13:09, junior forward Sam Lechel had his name added to the scoresheet with a goal. Mr. Lechel was assisted by junior line mates Cam Conover and Cam Leiffers. Cam Leiffers scored a short-handed goal for Powers at 2:50 of the second. Line mate Cam Conover had the assist. Senior defenseman Garrett Johnson completed the scoring for Powers in the second with an even-strength goal. Johnson was assisted by Chase Knoblock (his second of the game) and Noah Reeser. 7-1 in favor of Flint after two periods.

Powers jumped back on the scoring bandwagon early in the third, when Chase Knoblock scored an even-strength goal at 16:39. Senior forward Joe Schunck and Jake Polakowski (his second) assisted. Senior forward Brendan Smith scored the Charger’s ninth goal, on the power play, at 6:42. Mason Weiss and Conor Witherspoon (his second) had the helpers.

Senior netminder Brady Stebbins stopped 15 out of 16 shots for the victory.

 

Flint Powers 7  Walsh Jesuit 0

The Chargers were right back it at on Saturday with a noon face-off versus Walsh Jesuit. Powers wasted no time as senior forward Conor Witherspoon took one to the house at 16:25 of the first. Sophomore Luke Evo and senior defenseman Mac Diver assisted on the Witherspoon goal. For the remainder of the first period, both teams battled furiously with neither being able to score. 1-0 in favor of Powers at the end of one.

In the second period, the Chargers found their mojo and went on a five-goal rampage. Sophomore forward Luke Evo started the onslaught at 14:44. He was assisted by line mates Jon Thomas and Conor Witherspoon. At 10:47, sophomore Mason Weiss teed it up with help from senior forward Brendan Smith. Two minutes and a bit later, Brendan Smith made it 3-0 in favor of Powers with a goal at 8:13. Mr. Smith was assisted by senior defenseman Garrett Johnson. Less than two minutes later, at 6:39, junior forward Sam Lechel lit the lamp. Junior forwards Cam Conover and Cam Leiffers assisted on Lechel’s goal. Conor Witherspoon netted his second goal of the game at 1:07 of the second. Witherspoon was assisted by Luke Evo and the captain, Jake Polakowski. 6-0 after two periods of play.

Senior forward Chase Knoblock completed the scoring for Powers in the third period at 4:24. Chase was assisted by senior defender Mac Diver (his second) and senior forward Noah Reeser.

Sophomore goalie Parker Rey stopped 20 shots to earn his second shut-out for the Chargers.
