With last year’s pre-regional loss to Saginaw still vivid in their minds, the Chargers faced off again against their SVL nemesis last night at the Crystal Field House. What a difference a year makes as Powers roared out of the gate and shut the formidable Hawks down 5-0 before a capacity crowd.

Powers opened the scoring early in the first when senior forward Brendan Smith scored the first of his three goals at 15:03 with the assistance of senior forwards Chase Knoblock and Conor Witherspoon. Sophomore forward Luke Evo gave the Chargers a two-goal advantage at 8:50 when he lit the lamp with the assistance of line mate Mason Weiss. 2-0 in favor of Powers at the end of one period of play.

Agent Smith got the crowd on its feet 29 seconds in to the period with his second goal of the game. He was assisted by senior defenseman Garrett Johnson and Chase Knoblock (his second helper). At 11:12, junior forward Cam Lieffers took one to the house with the assistance of his line mates junior forwards Cam Conover and Sam Lechel. Brendan Smith scored his hat trick goal at 3:28 of the second. Mr. Smith was assisted by the captain, Jake Polakowski.

Despite intense effort on the part of both squads, neither team was able to score in the third period.

Junior goaltender Parker Rey was rock-solid in net, turning away 15 shots for his fourth consecutive shut-out and sixth in seven games.
