Five 2nd period goals rallied Powers past U of D Jesuit on the ice Friday night at Crystal Fieldhouse.

Senior Grant Morrison scored on a pass from senior Connor Korhonen at 14:55 of the first period to open the scoring and put the Chargers on the board 1-0. Morrison’s goal was the only goal scored in the opening period from either side as the teams locked horns in what looked to be setting up as a defensive battle.

Coach Travis Perry must have struck a chord with his team in the locker room as the Zamboni cleared the ice in between periods as the Chargers came out flying to start the second stanza. Cam Conover buried a pass from line mates Luke Evo and Sam Lechel just 30 seconds in. The Cubs answered back just a minute later with a Ben Charboneau goal to cut the Powers lead back to one. Korhonen lit the lamp for Powers from Josh Warda at the 15:40 as the Chargers scored the next four goals unanswered. Conover scored his second goal of the period off yet another Evo pass from the top of the circle driving one off the post and behind the U of D Jesuit net minder. Conover paid back the favor as he fed Evo in the slot who sniped the top corner putting the Cubs back on their heels 5-1. At the 4:13 mark, it was Sam Lechel’s turn as he followed the Evo tally with a goal of his own to give the Chargers a 6-1 commanding lead.

U of D tried to climb back in it as Hank Sznewajs scored just before the horn sounded to end of the second period, assisted by Charboneau and Collin Houston.

The resilient Cubs would not go away easily as forward Brendan Gumbel scored the next goal just 30 seconds into the third period slicing the Powers lead back to just three. Two minutes later, Flint Powers went on the power-play when senior Sam Lechel skated out of the corner off a Korhonen pass and rifled one into the net for his second goal, finally turning the lights out on the U of D Jesuit Cubs.

Flint Powers hockey action will resume when they take on Allen Park Friday, December 29th at 6pm at Crystal Fieldhouse.
