The Flint Powers hockey team finally returned to their winning ways Wednesday night by beating FNV Griffins 6-2 in the first round of Regional playoff action at Crystal Fieldhouse.

Connor Korhonen jump-started the Powers offense in the first period by scoring the first goal of the game on an assist from Evan Babka. Minutes later Luke Evo took a Josh Warda pass and lit the lamp putting the Chargers up 2-0. Brendan Maly responded for the Griffins with a PP wrap-around goal just before the period ended cutting the Powers lead to 2-1.

Christian Wentworth opened the Charger scoring in the second period by banging home a Sam Lechel rebound on the Powers power play. Luke Evo then buried his second goal of the game on a snapper in the back of the net off a Josh Kovach pass. Keigan Wildfong got involved in the scoring with an unassisted effort from the corner extending the Charger lead to 5-1. The Griffins would not go away easily as Trey Morgan took advantage of yet another Powers penalty with a back-hand goal from the slot drawing the Griffins to within three, ending the second stanza.

Sam Lechel turned the lights out on FNV by scoring a shorty as time ticked down in the third period putting the game out of reach 6-2.

Next up for the Chargers is the Regional Championship versus 24-2-1 Detroit Country Day Saturday at Crystal Fieldhouse @ 1pm. This is one you won’t want to miss as Powers continues the quest towards their first ever state title.
