The Powers Chargers hockey team braved the wintery conditions and traveled to Gaylord this past weekend to participate in the Annual D3 Challenge defeating Alpena 5-1 and East Grand Rapids 5-1.
Luke Evo wasted no time putting Powers on the board versus EGR by re-directing a Mike Wilson blast from the point and into the net at the 7:34 mark of the first period. Minutes later Evo and Lance Mullin worked the puck to the slot finding Cam Leiffers who torched one past the Pioneer net minder to extend the lead. With time winding down in the first period, Connor Korhonen and Keigan Wildfong found a wide open Grant Morrison at the top of the circle who ripped a shot off the cross bar and into the twine (bar-down) giving the Chargers a 3-0 lead to end the first.
The Chargers continued their scoring barrage into the second period when Cam Conover one-timed a power play goal with an assist going to line mate Cam Leiffers. Evo scored his second goal of the contest when he ripped a snap shot short side past the EGR goalie putting Powers up 5-0.
The EGR defense stiffened as they held the potent Powers offense scoreless throughout the third period. Ben Forsyth scored for the Pioneers with 5 minutes to go in the game, assisted by Kamden Whallon to avoid the shut out.
Powers out shot East Grand Rapids 30-18 in the contest.
Powers begins Saginaw Valley Conference play Wednesday night when they take on Mt. Pleasant at Crystal Fieldhouse.
Number two ranked Flint Powers collided with number nine ranked Grand Rapids Catholic Central at the Midland Civic Arena Saturday night. Mike Rinoldo’s goal late in the third period led the Chargers past the feisty Cougars 3-2.
The hard fought first period ended in a 0-0 draw with the Chargers out shooting GRCC 8-5. It was not until mid-way through the second period when Powers forward Sam Lechel scored drawing first blood with assists from Evan Babka and Christian Wentworth. Minutes later Wentworth followed up with a goal of his own off the dish from Josh Warda and Josh Kovach putting the Chargers up by two goals.
The Cougars roared back with an unassisted goal from Jacob Onstott followed by a goal from Sam Shwierking knotting the game 2-2 with 35 seconds remaining in the third period.
Both teams found the scoring difficult until the final five minutes of the game when senior forward Mike Rinoldo capitalized by banging home his own rebound for the game winner putting Powers up for good 3-2.
Powers travels to Gaylord this weekend to play in the D3 Challenge taking on Alpena Friday night at 6pm and East Grand Rapids Saturday night at 6pm.
Despite losing 11 seniors from last year’s powerhouse hockey team to graduation, Flint Powers appears to have simply reloaded their talent pool.
Powers faced off Wednesday night against Jackson Lumen Christi in a physical contest at the Optimist Arena in Jackson and skated away with a 5-3 victory to remain unbeaten.
Freshmen forward Tyler Lawrence started the scoring for the Chargers by snapping one past Titan goalie Gavin Warner at 14:25 of the first period assisted by line mate Connor Korhonen and Josh Warda. Bear Kennedy answered for JLC with a goal assisted by defensemen Spencer Mazur to tie the contest just before the end of the first period.
The Titans took a 2-1 lead to open up the second period on an unassisted tally from Keegan Smith. Flint Powers quickly went to work scoring three unanswered goals. Cam Conover drove one home off of a rebound with assists going to Cam Leiffers and Lance Mullin. Minutes later senior forward Sam Lechel picked up a puck in the neutral zone and flipped a highlight reel top shelf backhand over the shoulder of the Titan net minder assisted by Christian Wentworth and Luke Evo. Less than a minute later Leiffers out muscled a Titan defender in the slot and rippled the twine to give Powers a 4-2 lead. The Titans fought back and cut into the Charger lead with a goal from Jarrett Boldt with 27 seconds remaining in the second period.
The hard hitting action continued throughout the third period until the 2:58 mark when Cam Conover found the back of the net again on an assist from Mike Wilson and Luke Evo icing the game for Flint Powers 5-3.
The Chargers outshot the Titans 32-19 in the contest.
Powers will be back in action Saturday night when they take on Grand Rapids Catholic Central at the Midland Event Center at 5:30pm.
